Cynthia Nixon urges And Just Like That fans to temper their expectations regarding Kim Cattrall's season 2 cameo. "I fear that after all the hype, people may be left wondering what the hype was all about. It's crucial to understand that it's a very short and minor cameo," Nixon, aged 57, disclosed in an interview with London's The Times, published on Sunday, July 2.
The New York native, known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the series, expressed disappointment at the premature announcement of Kim's upcoming appearance. She had hoped that it would remain a surprise until viewers watched the episode.
In May, Variety reported that 66-year-old Cattrall, who did not reprise her role as Samantha Jones in the first season of the Sex and the City spinoff, would make a brief appearance in the season 2 finale. Sarah Jessica Parker, her former co-star with whom she has had a tumultuous relationship over the years, expressed excitement about Cattrall's cameo during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in June. She shared that she thought it was a great idea and was thrilled that they were able to make it happen for Cattrall. The 58-year-old actress, known for her role in Hocus Pocus 2, added that she was really pleased with the outcome.
Parker stated to the Hollywood Reporter in June 2022 that Cattrall had not been approached to join the cast of AJLT before its premiere in December 2021.
"We did not ask her to be a part of this because she clearly expressed that it was not something she wanted to pursue, and it no longer felt right for us, so it never crossed our minds," explained the Emmy winner, known for her role as Carrie Bradshaw. "You have to respect someone's words, and if they are publicly expressing their disinterest in being involved, playing a certain character, or being in a specific environment, you reach a point in life where you say, 'Well, we understand that.'"
AJLT writers explained Cattrall’s absence in season 1 by stating that Samantha had relocated to London following a growing disconnect with her best friends, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte York. Although the on-screen explanation for their fallout emphasized Carrie no longer utilizing Samantha's services as a publicist, the exact reasons behind Parker and Cattrall's real-life animosity remain uncertain.
After Cattrall's brother passed away in February 2018, Parker expressed her condolences through Instagram, but her former colleague found it displeasing. Cattrall took to Instagram to convey her feelings, stating that Parker's constant attempts to reach out served as a painful reminder of her past and present cruelty. Cattrall made it emphatically clear that Parker is neither her family nor her friend, and urged her to cease exploiting their tragedy to rebuild her "nice girl" image.
Parker has denied Cattrall's accusations and expressed caution in discussing the situation. During an interview on the "Awards Chatter" podcast in June 2022, the Divorce star stated that she has always strived to maintain a respectful and responsible attitude towards everyone on set. She emphasized that only one person has made negative remarks about her, and no one else has ever spoken about her in such a way.
Cattrall, although making a brief return to the SATC universe, had certain conditions regarding her appearance. During a June interview on The View, she humorously shared, "It's quite interesting to receive a call from the head of HBO asking, 'What can we do?' and I responded with, 'Hmm. Let me get creative.'" One of her requests included bringing back costume designer Pat Field, as Cattrall felt it was essential to embody the iconic Samantha style and push the boundaries once again.
