Encountered during sea voyages, Corsair Greymon is a Duergar trader and boat captain. Although eliminating him guarantees the acquisition of the Bow of the Banshee, players have the option to avoid conflict and still obtain the bow by engaging in trade with Greymon.
The Bow of the Banshee possesses the ability to inflict the Frightened condition upon foes, and it also bestows a +1d4 bonus to attack and damage rolls. This makes it a highly sought-after weapon for party members specializing in ranged combat.
Baldur's Gate 3 is filled with non-player characters (NPCs) who possess the game's best armor and weapons. In order to equip their party with the strongest gear, players will need to defeat numerous characters throughout their journeys. It is often easier if the NPC in question is already an evil character or is set to engage in battle with the player's party. However, it becomes a dilemma for gamers when considering whether it is worth killing innocent or helpful Baldur's Gate 3 characters for the loot.
In this specific situation, there is an NPC named Corsair Greymon who possesses an exceptional bow, making it highly desirable for players with ranged party members. Killing Corsair Greymon, who is not a villainous character, becomes a moral dilemma for those who are following a good-aligned playthrough. Fortunately, his death may be unavoidable or there may be alternate means to acquire the Bow of the Banshee.
There's a Good Chance Killing Corsair Greymon Will Happen Organically
Corsair Greymon is an NPC - a trader and boat captain who belongs to the Duergar race. The player will come across him while sailing towards Grymforge in the Underdark. Greymon's ship will approach the player's vessel, and he will board it. When interacting with Greymon, there are multiple conversation options available, all requiring a successful check to avoid engaging in combat. Engaging in combat with Greymon can be a strategic choice to obtain the Bow of the Banshee weapon. However, trying to push him into the water is not recommended as it will result in losing all his loot, which will sink to the depths with him.
If the player manages to avoid a fight during their initial encounter, Greymon will accompany them to Grymforge. Here, there is another chance for combat as they come across a trapped True Soul named Nere in the caves of the area. If the player successfully rescues Nere and chooses to side with him, Greymon will become an opponent in the ensuing battle. It is important to note that Nere is not a morally upright character, evident by his merciless murder of a gnome slave upon being freed. Thus, partnering with Nere is not advisable for those aiming for a morally righteous playthrough.
There's More Than One Way to Get the Bow of the Banshee
If the player successfully navigates the situations mentioned above without engaging in a fight with Greymon, they have the option to attack him at the Grymforge whenever they wish. However, this is not required as Greymon is a merchant, as previously mentioned. Instead, the player can easily purchase the Bow of the Banshee from him at any point after reaching the area.
Regardless of whether the player loots Greymon's body or directly buys the weapon from him, the rare Bow of the Banshee is essential for BG3 party members who specialize in ranged combat and can wield short bows. Its statistics are as follows:
1d6 + 1 (2-7) Piercing damage
Blood-Curdling Emission: On a hit, possibly inflict Frightened. Gain a +1d4 bonus to attack and damage rolls against Frightened creatures.
Weapon Enchantment: +1
Hamstring Shot (with Proficiency): Shoot an enemy in the thigh and possibly reduce their Movement Speed by 50%.
Inflicting fear upon enemies is incredibly effective, as it immobilizes them and hinders their attacks and abilities. This bow possesses the capability to induce fear, along with a bonus +1d4 to attack and damage rolls against affected targets, making it a truly formidable weapon. Regardless of the method in which the player obtains it from Corsair Greymon, acquiring this bow is highly recommended.
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently accessible on PC and PS5, and an Xbox Series X/S version is also being developed.
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I have mixed feelings about the article. On the one hand, I understand the desire to obtain the best possible gear for my party members in Baldur's Gate 3. The Bow of the Banshee is a powerful weapon, and it would be a great asset to any ranged character. On the other hand, I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with the idea of killing an innocent NPC to get it. Corsair Greymon doesn't seem like a bad person, and I'm not sure if I want to do something that would hurt him.
I think it's important to consider the consequences of our actions in Baldur's Gate 3. Killing an innocent NPC could have far-reaching consequences, and it's important to weigh the benefits and risks before making a decision. In this case, I think the benefits of obtaining the Bow of the Banshee outweigh the risks of killing Corsair Greymon. However, I would still feel guilty about doing it, and I would try to find a way to avoid it if possible.
