Breaking: Epic Collaboration - Xbox First-Party Game Joins Forces with PlayStation!

Xbox Game Studios hints at a potential groundbreaking move, as head Matt Booty suggests the possibility of a major first-party game making its way to PlayStation, creating unprecedented cross-platform opportunities

Xbox has left the possibility open for The Outer Worlds 2, one of its upcoming first-party games, to be released on PlayStation platforms. While the game is currently announced for PC and Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty has suggested that it could potentially come to PlayStation as well. However, it is worth noting that Xbox's future multiplatform support for specific games, including The Outer Worlds 2, is a complex and sensitive matter.

After the acquisition of Bethesda, Xbox honored all of the new division's contracts for games that were planned for release on PlayStation devices. Examples of this include the full releases of Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Since then, Bethesda releases have been exclusive to platforms supported by Xbox, such as PC and Xbox Series X/S. Games like Hi-Fi Rush, Redfall, and the highly anticipated Starfield are all exclusive to these platforms. The decision to make Bethesda titles exclusive has sparked controversy, but there is no indication that Xbox has reconsidered this strategy.

The unique situation surrounding The Outer Worlds 2 could potentially result in its release on PlayStation platforms in the future, deviating from Xbox's current practices. In a deposition given during a federal trial related to Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Booty discussed the possibility of The Outer Worlds 2 being exclusive to a specific platform. Booty clarified that no decision had been made yet regarding whether the game would be released on PlayStation.

When it comes to the potential release of The Outer Worlds 2 on PlayStation platforms while other games are not, Booty offers a logical explanation. He suggests that Microsoft might choose to release the game on PlayStation because there is already an existing community from the first game on that platform. In simpler terms, Xbox may want to prioritize and maintain their commitment to that particular audience rather than neglecting them.

It is plausible that Booty's statement is aimed at presenting Xbox in a favorable light before a judge. It is highly likely that The Outer Worlds 2 will remain exclusive to PC and Xbox Series X/S. Booty's intention may be to create the impression that Xbox is not as competitive as it appears, particularly in response to Sony's claim that Microsoft will make Call of Duty exclusive.

If Booty acknowledges the potential for The Outer Worlds 2 to be released on PlayStation consoles, then it cannot be completely ruled out. However, fans of The Outer Worlds on PlayStation should not get their hopes up. If Xbox had plans to bring The Outer Worlds 2 to PlayStation, it would have likely made that announcement by now.
