Billie Eilish called out Variety for revealing her sexuality without her consent during her award acceptance speech on Sunday. She expressed frustration over the focus on her personal life rather than her achievements. Eilish, 21, urged people to stop fixating on her romantic preferences and instead focus on her music.
Eilish attended Variety’s Hitmakers event on Saturday, December 2nd and was questioned about her previous comments in an interview with the magazine. When asked if she intended to make her coming out a big moment, Eilish responded that she didn't. "But I kind of thought, 'Wasn't it obvious?' I didn't realize people didn't know," she said. "I just don't really believe in it. I'm just like, 'Why can't we just exist?' I've been doing this for a long time and I just didn't talk about it. Whoops."

Eilish commented that she came across the article on November 13, and was surprised that it had been published on that day. She expressed excitement about people now being aware of her orientation and stated, "I am for the girls."
During the initial interview, Eilish openly talked about her romantic interest in women and acknowledged feeling disconnected from other women. She expressed her love and attraction to women, emphasizing that it is a genuine feeling.
She said, "I have strong connections with the women in my life, both friends and family. I am physically attracted to them, but I also feel intimidated by their beauty and presence."
Eilish continued to discuss her gender identity, revealing that she has never felt like a woman. "I've never felt desirable or feminine. I have to convince myself that I'm a pretty girl. Although I identify as 'she/her', I've never really felt like a girl."

In a September 2021 interview with Elle, the Grammy winner dismissed speculation about her sexuality, questioning why it was anyone else's concern. She also questioned the disparity in attention given to men's love lives. Most recently, Eilish was in a relationship with Jesse Rutherford, the lead singer of The Neighbourhood, but the couple ended their less than one year romance in May. Eilish's representative confirmed that the split was amicable and denied any rumors of infidelity, stating that both Eilish and Rutherford are currently single.
