In Baldur's Gate 3, the cape category falls short in comparison to the game's amazing customization possibilities and incredible itemization. This is surprising, considering that both Baldur's Gate 2 and even Baldur's Gate 1 offered a wider range of options. Larian Studios might have made this decision due to their experience with capes in Divinity: Original Sin 2, where there were significant issues with clipping. The true reason behind their choice remains known only to them. However, players are still able to personalize their cloaks to some extent by dyeing them. Despite the limited quantity of options, here are the top choices in BG3.
7 Cape Of The Red Prince
Larian Studios has included the Cape of the Red Prince in their game as a tribute to their highly praised game, Divinity: Original Sin 2. This special armor equipment is exclusively available to players who have the Digital Deluxe edition. The Cape of the Red Prince pays homage to the character of the same name from DOS2, a noble lizard with a fabled destiny.
While the cape does not provide any stat enhancements or in-game advantages, it adds a touch of elegance to players' characters. Adorned with exquisitely detailed embroidery featuring two dragons and a flaming crown, this cape is truly a sight to behold. Unfortunately, it is classified as a common item and can only be obtained by Digital Deluxe edition owners. Nonetheless, players have the option to customize the cape with different dyes, offering a bit of versatility.
6 The Death Stalker Mantle
The game's most useful cape is unfortunately experiencing multiple issues. Firstly, it appears to be malfunctioning, especially after the recent update. Secondly, only players who chose the Dark Urge background are able to access it. This may be why it is classified as a "Very Rare" item.
Previously, this cloak was quite overpowered, granting the player the ability "The Shadow Itself." This ability enhanced the player's stealth checks and, once per turn, caused the player to become invisible for two turns when they defeated an enemy, enveloped in "primeval darkness."
5 Cloak Of Cunning Brume
In order to obtain the Dark Urge background, players have two options. The first option is to befriend Alfira, who will then request the player's assistance and subsequently be killed by the player while she is asleep. Upon the player's next long rest, a non-playable character (NPC) will present the player with the cloak as a gift. The second option involves subduing Alfira without causing harm, leading to a subsequent encounter with a different bard named Quill Grootslang. If choosing this path to acquire the cape, it is important to note that Alfira may hold some resentment towards the character who incapacitated her, so it is advisable to use a character with whom she will not be interacting in the future.
The Cloak of Cunning Brume, adorned with a shimmering star on its back, can be acquired from the renowned merchant, Mattis, during Act 2. To unlock this exquisite garment, players must ensure the successful survival of the mischievous Tieflings in their daring escapade.
4 Cloak Of Protection
The cloak's usefulness extends to all characters, but its true value shines for rogues, thanks to its unique ability. Once a character disengages from combat, the cloak envelops them in a dense, two-meter radius foggy cloud. Although the cloud only lingers for a single turn, it generously grants ample time for players to strategically capitalize on its concealment.
The cloak featured here can be found in both Baldur’s Gate 1 and Baldur’s Gate 2, offering players a chance to acquire it once again. While its benefits may not be extraordinary, it remains highly valuable for any class. Particularly, it proves to be a superb option for classes that should refrain from wearing armor, like barbarians.
The player's armor class is improved by +1 and they also receive a +1 bonus to saving throws by wearing the cloak. If players are interested in obtaining it, they can purchase it from Quartermaster Talli at the Last Light Inn in Act 2 of the game. It should be noted, however, that some players have reported being overwhelmed with various cloaks as loot during Act 2.
3 Vivacious Cloak
The Vivacious Cloak is a must-have for spellcasters. This cloak possesses the extraordinary ability called "Arcane Vivaciousness," which bestows upon the wearer an additional 7 temporary hit points whenever they cast a spell while engaged in close quarters combat.
2 Cloak Of Elemental Absorption
No matter if the player's character is a fragile but powerful glass cannon, prefers to play it safe, or finds themselves in a difficult situation, this invaluable item is sure to be useful. The cloak can be discovered inside a chest located at the coordinates (X-260, Y-881) in the esteemed Grand Mausoleum.
The Cloak of Elemental Absorption is an invaluable asset to its wearer, providing the extraordinary ability called "Absorb Elements." This ability enables the wearer to absorb elemental damage once per short rest, reducing the harm inflicted by the next elemental attack on the player by half. Moreover, the wearer gains the power to inflict an additional 1d6 damage of the absorbed element type on their next attack.
At this time, it is still unsure whether this cloak has a designated spawn place or can be found as random loot.
1 Derivation Cloak
The rare Derivation Cloak grants the wearer an ability called “Deadly derivation.” This ability heals the wearer by 1d4 hit points when said wearer poisons a foe.
While not everyone may find it beneficial, players who heavily rely on poisoning their enemies will certainly appreciate having this cloak equipped. Unfortunately, the specific location of this cloak remains unclear.
