The Guardian's ultimate goal is to defeat the Absolute and dismantle the Grand Design, while simultaneously engaging in a battle on the Astral Plane. Acting as a conduit between the player and the Guardian, the Astral Prism influences decisions, including whether to trust the Githyanki. Interestingly, the Guardian encourages embracing the powers of the Mind Flayer tadpole, but its true purpose becomes evident later on.

Eventually, players discover that their Guardian in Baldur's Gate 3 is, in fact, a Mind Flayer known as The Emperor. Surprisingly, this name does not accurately represent its position among other Mind Flayers, as The Emperor possesses an exceptional sense of individual freedom that allows them to resist the influence of an Elder Brain most of the time. Consequently, they can fully harness their powers without losing themselves. Players will uncover that The Emperor was once an ambitious adventurer, not unlike the main character in Baldur's Gate 3, and had significant influence within the city as a prominent member of the Knights of the Shield. This secretive organization, akin to an underground Illuminati, granted The Emperor the title of The Emperor.

While this twist can be anticipated, it merely serves as an initial revelation regarding The Emperor's true identity and whether players can trust this Mind Flayer or not. The subsequent revelation, which some players may overlook if they fail to complete Wyll's personal quest, miss certain parts of it, or do not recruit him (or have him leave the party), occurs when Wyll's father divulges the existence of a guardian beneath Wyrm's Rock Fortress, responsible for protecting Baldur's Gate. It is within this location that players will learn the backstory of The Emperor prior to their transformation.

Players seeking the aid of the dragon Anduran against the Absolute will venture beneath the fortress to solve puzzles or overcome obstacles by force. However, instead of encountering a living dragon, they discover its remains. Surprisingly, the dragon's consciousness reaches out to the players, referring to them as a Coward. Players soon realize that Anduran actually addresses the Emperor as a Coward since the Emperor was Balduran, Anduran's greatest ally in a previous life. By this point in the game, players would have heard of Balduran several times. Balduran was an adventurer and seafarer in Faerun who amassed wealth and founded the city of Baldur's Gate, which has become a formidable power. Balduran sought new adventures and journeyed to Moonrise Towers, where he inadvertently became a part of a Mind Flayer colony before the events of Baldur's Gate 3.

There is more to the story, including the reasons why Balduran betrayed and killed Anduran, which unveils a significant twist. Not only does Balduran influence players to embrace the power and form of a Mind Flayer, but he is also the founder of the very city they are striving to protect. Through Balduran, players can learn a lesson about the dangers of becoming consumed by adventure and power, even though he still retains his core identity and aims to safeguard the city he established. This adds complexity to his character motivations, and although the revelation may be shocking, it aligns logically with the contextual information provided throughout the story.
