BioWare's first two installments in the iconic franchise established them as the developers of ambitious story-driven role-playing games. However, the third entry, based on the Dungeons and Dragons IP from Wizards of the Coast, was handled by Larian Studios, renowned RPG veterans. Surprisingly, the transition between developers was seamless, resulting in the release of a game that completed the highly consistent Baldur's Gate trilogy.

In a remarkable achievement, Baldur's Gate 3 has now secured the title of the highest-rated PC game of all time, receiving an impressive overall critic score of 97 on Metacritic. While Disco Elysium: The Final Cut also achieved the same score, Larian's RPG surpasses ZA/UM's accomplishment with an additional 16 reviews as of August 14. Larian's latest RPG, Baldur's Gate 3, has already made it into the top ten highest-user-rated PC games of all time. With nearly 5,900 player reviews and an average score of 9.1, it currently holds the tenth position. It's worth noting that the nine games ahead of it have a slightly higher average player score of 9.2. This release has also caused The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim to drop out of the top ten highest-rated PC games of all time in terms of Metascore rankings. The current list includes two Baldur's Gate titles, with the second installment in the series, Shadows of Amn, ranking eighth.

Metacritic's all-time PC top ten has gone through three changes in the last three years. The success of Baldur's Gate 3 follows the releases of Disco Elysium: The Final Cut in 2021 and Persona 5 Royal in 2022. Prior to this trio, the last game to make it onto the list was the 2015 PC port of Grand Theft Auto 5, which currently holds the fourth position.

Baldur's Gate 3 holds the ninth spot in multi-platform rankings, boasting a remarkable aggregate score of 97, a score matched by Red Dead Redemption 2 and the two Super Mario Galaxy games. The impact of its upcoming console versions on its rank is yet to be determined, particularly considering the slight variations between the PC version and the forthcoming Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions.

Currently, Baldur's Gate 3 is already accessible on PC, and it is set to be launched on PS5 on September 6, while an Xbox Series X/S port is also underway.
