In Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3, players have the opportunity to meet Auntie Ethel, a hag character. The outcome of this encounter can vary, and depending on the player's actions, it can impact the game later on. One such outcome is the emergence of the quest known as "Help the Hag Survivors."
Players can stumble upon this quest by discovering Anti-Hag Support Group posters scattered throughout the Lower City in Baldur's Gate 3. Another option is to encounter the building where the group is currently seeking refuge. However, it is worth noting that the reception from the group is far from welcoming.
Where to Find the Hag Survivors
Players may encounter their first hurdle when trying to locate the support group. All the posters direct them to Barren's Coop, situated northeast of the Heapside Strand waypoint. Unfortunately, upon arrival, they'll find that the building is vacant. However, a keen Perception check will reveal an Eviction Notice on the cupboard adjacent to the entrance, indicating that the owner has ousted the group.
To unravel the group's whereabouts, players should peruse the Barely Legible Letter resting on the desk to the left of the front door. According to the letter, the support group has relocated to a place known as Old Garlow's. This residence is a partially ruined mansion positioned just east of the Counting House. Alternatively, players can embark upon this quest by venturing inside the building and unexpectedly encountering its inhabitants.
There are three access points into the building. The first option is to approach the front door, which is currently locked but not restricted. The party can either use lock-picking techniques or physically damage the door to gain entry. Alternatively, they can take a detour to the western side of the building where there is a pathway that leads to the back entrance. However, this route is obstructed by several bookcases. It should be noted that these bookcases are not particularly sturdy and can be easily overcome with only four hit points each. Lastly, the party has the option to utilize their abilities to either fly, leap, or teleport in order to reach the balcony on the second floor.
How to Help Mayrina
Initially, the party will encounter hostility from the hag survivors. In order to calm the situation, the party leader must succeed in a Persuasion or Intimidation check with a difficulty of 15. If this initial attempt fails, players should prioritize targeting Jatlo. Once defeated, Jatlo will transform into a redcap, causing the remaining survivors to become allies.
If the party successfully passes this check, the survivors will reveal that their leader, Mayrina from Act 1, has been transformed into a sheep by the hag. Mayrina, along with Connor if she has cared for him, can be found upstairs. When attempting to communicate with Mayrina, she emits various non-sheep sounds, even when Animal Handling is employed. Even if a character possesses the ability to Speak with Animals, Mayrina can only faintly mention a doll.
The specific doll in question is a Voodoo Doll, located on the same floor as Mayrina. It emits a green glow and occasionally giggles to itself. The doll is resistant to Piercing, Necrotic, and Radiant damage, and it is completely immune to Fire, Psychic, and Poison. If players attempt to pick up or harm the doll, it will teleport to another location within the room, but it will never leave the floor it is on. Since the doll represents a curse, the hex on Mayrina can also be broken by casting Remove Curse on either her or the doll.
Upon the curse's conclusion, Jatlo will immediately confront the party. It is essential to note that Jatlo is not a hexed or charmed dragonborn, but rather a disguised redcap. Therefore, a confrontation is inevitable. If given the opportunity to act first, Jatlo will summon a group of Armored Crabs to attack both the hag survivors and the party.
In order to simplify this encounter, it is recommended to target Jatlo prior to ascending the stairs to locate Mayrina. Once Jatlo sustains damage and transforms into a redcap, the other survivors will become allies, enabling the party to defeat him before he summons the crabs. Attacking Jatlo is also a means to breaking the curse.
If Mayrina survives the battle, she will explain that she is investigating the disappearance of a kidnapped child. This initiates a new mission called "Avenge the Survivors of the Hag." Players will be rewarded with the Staff of Interruption upon completion of the mission, and Mayrina mentions that she has some important research stored in a secure safe. The safe is located on the south wall of the main room, the one with the staircase.
By reading the research, players will acquire the alchemy recipe for Hag's Bane, a unique type of grenade. To craft it, combine the Ashes of Dried Fey Flower (also found in the safe) with any Essence. When thrown at a hag, the grenade will cause her to expel the child from her belly, greatly facilitating the subsequent mission to rescue the child. Finally, players should search Jatlo's body and retrieve his key. Although the hag-related events in Baldur's Gate 3 will continue, this particular quest will be completed.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on macOS and PC, and is coming to PS5 on September 6.
