Where To Find The BG3 Respec NPCHow To Reset A Character To Level 1 In BG3
Baldur's Gate 3 is widely known as a massive game, offering countless possibilities that ensure each playthrough is unique. However, players often find themselves growing tired of their chosen build after spending several hours in the game. Fortunately, respeccing in BG3 is both forgiving and affordable, once the mechanic is unlocked.
Early on in Act 1, players can discover a respec NPC in Baldur's Gate 3, even before reaching the Druid Grove. This NPC has the ability to completely reset a character, including companions, starting them back at Level 1. Additionally, they can even change the player's Class if desired. Once players have completed the Nautiloid tutorial area, they only need to venture into a nearby catacomb to unlock the ability to respec.
Where To Find The BG3 Respec NPC
Find the Dank Crypt in the Overgrown Ruins' Chapel
In Act 1, players will come across a locked door located north of the game's starting point on the beach. If Shadowheart was not interacted with on the Nautiloid, she will appear at this location. This locked door serves as one of the two entrances to the Dank Crypt beneath the Overgrown Ruins. To gain access to the innermost Crypts, players must skillfully lockpick the door while also avoiding numerous traps along the way.
It is possible to reach the entrance by picking up Astarion first, but a more convenient and less dangerous way can be found above. Head east towards the coast from where Lae'zel appears, just a bit north of Gale's starting point, to reach the upper area of the Overgrown Ruins.
Ensure that you have a full party before proceeding. You can either eliminate the group of bandits or persuade them to leave before venturing further. Progress through the complex maze-like underground crypts, defeating enemies along the way, until you reach the Dank Crypt. This room is filled with deceased undead and has a central alcove that is hidden behind a button. The button is revealed through a Passive Perception check while passing by. Pressing the button causes the undead in the room to rise, initiating combat with a small group of skeletal mages and warriors.
Defeat Undead, Answer Withers' Question, Then Return to Camp
Optimizing Party Members for the Encounter with the Undead:
Before engaging in the encounter with the undead, it is important to invest some time in setting up the party members in the most effective way. To achieve this, press G prior to pressing the button, as this will allow for individually moving companions around the room. It is highly recommended to have everyone spread out to avoid enemies from concentrating their attacks on a single target. This strategy not only minimizes the impact of area-of-effect attacks but also enhances the overall survivability of the group.
Once everyone is positioned, preferably near a reanimated skeleton, press the concealed button to initiate the combat encounter. This button will unveil a smaller section of the Dank Crypt, containing a chest and a sealed sarcophagus. Interact with the sarcophagus to reveal Withers, a mysterious skeleton who emerges from the coffin and engages in conversation with the player.
Withers will inquire about the value of a life. Respond to this question (any response will suffice) and conclude the dialogue. Withers will then depart to attend to the Dank Crypt, but will reappear at camp the next time you rest for an extended period. From that point onward in Baldur's Gate 3, Withers will remain in this location, prepared to provide his services.
How To Reset A Character To Level 1 In BG3
To respec a character in Baldur's Gate 3, players can completely reset them by speaking with Withers at their camp. Withers possesses two unique abilities that are highly beneficial to all parties in BG3: the power to revive deceased companions and the capability to reset both players' and companions' builds entirely.
To change class in Baldur's Gate 3, Withers only requests a modest fee of 100 gold. This sum can easily be obtained by selling a few unused scrolls, pieces of equipment, or alchemical ingredients. Once the decision is confirmed, the chosen character will revert to Level 1 and be directed to a Class Selection screen.
To re-spec a character, simply choose the same Class (and Subclass, if applicable) from the initial menu. Once you have confirmed and closed the Class Selection, click the golden up arrow on the character's portrait on the left side of the screen. Players can make new choices at every level up to the point they were at before re-specing. This means that a Level 8 character utilizing this service can go back and make new choices at each level without losing XP.
The only thing that is lost when starting over is the 100 gold, making it very affordable to re-spec Baldur's Gate 3 characters. Additionally, Withers doesn't mind if you reclaim the money through pickpocketing.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available on PC and will release for PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2023.
