Joining the protagonist in the prologue of Baldur's Gate 3 is a githyanki named Lae'zel, who is the first person to do so. Like her fellow githyanki, Lae'zel has personal experience with having a mind flayer parasite implanted in her brain.
Due to her understanding of this predicament, Lae'zel firmly believes that the party can discover a remedy by locating the nearby githyanki creche. Even if players choose not to engage with Lae'zel after the prologue, they can still embark on the quest to find this cure. However, having Lae'zel accompany them significantly facilitates the process. The initial task involved in this quest, and also in Lae'zel's personal journey, entails tracking down a githyanki patrol in the local area.
Where to Find Zorru
To begin the search for the gith patrol, locating a tiefling named Zorru is essential. Lae'zel has uncovered that Zorru had an encounter with her people in the vicinity. Therefore, she requests the protagonist to locate Zorru in order to gather information.
Zorru, along with other tiefling refugees, can be found in the Emerald Grove. Consequently, if the tieflings depart from the grove or meet an unfortunate fate, players will lose the opportunity to converse with him. Presently, Zorru only has a single line of dialogue, similar to most background NPCs, unless Lae'zel is a member of the active party.
- If players have Lae'zel with them, they can let her take charge during the conversation to easily gain approval points. Despite her aggressive demeanor, the conversation will not turn violent even if players choose not to intervene. Once the conversation concludes, the location of the githyanki patrol will be marked on their map. This patrol is situated to the southwest of the Waukeen's Rest inn, near the exit of the mountain pass.
- Even if players do not have Lae'zel, they will still come across the patrol when they visit this location. As the party approaches, a dragon will soar above, while a tiefling named Ellyka will caution the protagonist against proceeding further.
What Happens When Lae'zel Is Present
Proceed past Ellyka and a cutscene will initiate. The githyanki patrol proceeds to demolish the wooden bridge in the northern direction. Once the cutscene concludes, the patrol's red dragon will position itself on the road leading to the Mountain Pass region. Consequently, players must confront the patrol should they wish to access Act Two without resorting to the Underdark route.
If Lae'zel happens to be among the active party members, she will temporarily leave the group and swiftly make her way towards the patrol. During this process, she will transfer all her belongings onto the protagonist, which can prove quite inconvenient if players have utilized her to transport a considerable number of heavy items. This occurrence is particularly peculiar as Lae'zel rejoins the party following the conversation with the patrol.
Much like with Zorru, players can earn some quick approval points with Lae'zel by initially allowing her to take charge of the conversation. However, tension arises when Kith'rak Voss reveals his quest for the Astral Prism, the very artifact Shadowheart possesses.
After this reveal, the most crucial decision awaits. If players advise Lae'zel to be truthful, she will mention the infection caused by the tadpole, leading Voss to order the patrol to exterminate the party before they transform into mind flayers. Conversely, if players present the artifact, Voss will accuse them of theft and command the patrol to eradicate them. Opting for the last choice will initiate a fight, regardless, making the infiltration of the githyanki creche more challenging or easier, depending on the decision. Additionally, Voss will invariably depart on his dragon.
The only means to resolve this encounter peacefully is through employing the Persuasion option. Fortunately, the difficulty check is merely 10. If players succeed, Lae'zel will agree to assist in locating the artifact, prompting both Voss and the patrol to withdraw.
What Happens When Lae'zel Isn't Present
When Voss departs, an Insight check can uncover that his declared destination is deceiving. While this may have no immediate consequences, players should bear this in memory as they proceed with Lae'zel's companion quest. Engaging in combat with the patrol grants players the opportunity to obtain a map from the patrol leader, which indicates the whereabouts of the creche. In the absence of Lae'zel and if the protagonist does not belong to the githyanki race, Kith'rak Voss displays a significantly heightened level of hostility as the party approaches. To navigate the conversation without escalating tensions, players are required to successfully pass multiple skill checks.
The first choice arises when Voss ponders the idea of immediately attacking the party. Players have the option to use Sleight of Hand, Insight, Intimidation, or Persuasion, aiming for a minimum DC of 15, in order to convince him to step back. Subsequently, Voss will employ Detect Thoughts to attempt to delve into the protagonist's mind, and players must succeed in a Wisdom check to avoid revealing too much. Lastly, players need to pass a Persuasion, Intimidation, or their own Detect Thoughts check in order to peacefully conclude the conversation.
If players successfully navigate these challenges, Kith'rak Voss will extend an invitation to the party to report any discoveries to the nearby creche. This allows a party without Lae'zel to access the creche without engaging in combat. Furthermore, if Lae'zel is part of the party but was not present at the time, players can return to camp to provide her with an update on the situation.
