One of the main antagonist in Baldur's Gate 3, Lord Enver Gortash, is being criticized by fans for falling short of expectations in the game's final act.
Gortash's lackluster character is often attributed by some players to his design, which they compare to that of a cosplayer. However, there are others who think that he was negatively impacted by cut content.
Despite facing such criticism, many fans continue to regard Baldur's Gate 3 as one of the best CRPGs out there. Its first two acts have received high praise, creating lofty expectations for its console versions.
A vocal portion of the Baldur's Gate 3 fanbase has expressed their disappointment with one of the game's main antagonists on social media. This criticism came after Baldur's Gate 3 dropped out of the top ten highest-rated games of all time list, indicating that its honeymoon period is coming to an end.
Warning! Late-game spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3 ahead. Despite being the highest-rated new game of 2023, surpassing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and the Resident Evil 4 remake, Larian Studios' latest RPG is receiving more attention for its flaws as players near the end of its extensive campaign. Particularly, these shortcomings seem to be concentrated in the third and final act of the game.
In another instance of this trend, numerous fans have recently gone online to criticize Baldur's Gate 3's antagonist, Lord Enver Gortash, as a weak point in an otherwise exceptional game. A discussion on the r/BaldursGate3 subreddit gained significant attention over the weekend and revealed that some players consider Gortash to be the RPG's most disappointing villain by a significant margin. These players argue that he failed to live up to the expectations set in Act 2.
While the majority of fans participating in the discussion agreed that Gortash was a disappointment, there is still division among the player base regarding the reasons behind this outcome. For instance, a Reddit user named thelumpyslapper, who initiated the thread criticizing Gortash, primarily took issue with his design, stating that they find it difficult to take a character who resembles "a 45-year-old man attempting to cosplay as Sasuke [from Naruto]" seriously. On the other hand, many other players believe that Gortash is simply a victim of content cuts. They express the opinion that a lord of tyranny raised by the devil could have had his own storyline focusing on the political intrigue in Baldur's Gate, which would have greatly improved his character.
Due to the game's lack of opportunity to explore the Upper City, which is controlled by the realm's political elites, Gortash was placed into Act 3 alongside Orin, the villain who steals the spotlight in the final hours of Baldur's Gate 3. This resulted in him being overshadowed by his murderous co-conspirator, as believed by some fans.
Despite this criticism, many fans of the genre still consider Baldur's Gate 3 to be one of the best CRPGs ever created, praising the flawless experience of its first two acts. This positive reception is encouraging for the game's console version, even though it will face tough competition in 2023 from highly anticipated RPGs like Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Baldur's Gate 3 is out now for PC, with a PS5 version coming September 6 and an Xbox Series X/S port also in development.
