Larian Studios is not currently working on a big expansion pack for Baldur's Gate 3, but it may happen in the future.
Baldur's Gate 3 has a limited maximum level, making it challenging to expand through DLC. However, the modding community might find it simpler to include the missing classic D&D classes compared to Larian Studios' efforts for DLC implementation.
Developer Larian Studios has stated that there is currently no active production of a major expansion pack for Baldur's Gate 3. However, there is still a possibility that it may happen in the future. In a recent interview with Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke, he discussed the game's release, success, and the significant challenge of moving on from its current state.
The popularity of Baldur's Gate 3 cannot be understated, as the game continues to break records following its launch from Steam's Early Access program. The game's success is evident by its ability to compete with the highly anticipated release of Hogwarts Legacy earlier in 2023, solidifying Larian Studios' status as a leading developer of CRPGs.
One of the noticeable aspects for Dungeons and Dragons players diving into Baldur's Gate 3 is that Larian Studios has chosen to set a relatively modest level cap for characters in the game. Unlike D&D's maximum baseline of 20, the cap in Baldur's Gate 3 is set at 12, as discussed by Swen Vincke in the recent interview with PC Gamer. Vincke mentions that balancing D&D's level 20 spells, such as Foresight and Wish, within the context of Baldur's Gate 3 would be quite challenging, and accomplishing this would require a significant amount of development effort, making the DLC more than just an expansion.
Vincke acknowledged that Larian Studios is currently not working on any DLC. While he didn't completely rule out the possibility, he mentioned that fans would have to wait a significant amount of time for any future updates. With Baldur's Gate 3 being a substantial RPG adventure, players will have plenty to keep them engaged, so the absence of DLC is not a major issue.
It is worth noting that some iconic D&D classes are not included in Baldur's Gate 3. Adding them to the game after its release could potentially be easier for Larian Studios compared to implementing character level 20. However, it would still require a significant amount of effort, and the modding community may be better equipped to handle such additions in the future.
Baldur's Gate 3, currently available on PC, has a few lingering problems, including the game's requirement of using an external launcher in addition to Steam. Larian's choice to include this feature raises questions and adds an extra delay for players wanting to dive into the game on Steam. This decision has left some puzzled about why the developer would follow such an unusual industry trend. Furthermore, a PS5 version of Baldur's Gate 3 is scheduled for release on September 6.
