Baldur's Gate 3: Conquering the Adamantine Forge (Grym) - Ultimate Boss Tactics Guide

Defeat the formidable adamantine golem in Baldur's Gate 3 with expert tactics Unleash your mastery by preparing for the fight and utilizing the powerful Grym Hammer

To begin the process at the Adamantine Forge in Grymforge, players must possess at least one mold and a piece of mithril ore. Additionally, players must overcome the most challenging boss battle in the entire Underdark region of Baldur's Gate 3.

Nicknamed Grym, the adamantine golem emerges from the forge after players rotate the lava valve. Grym possesses remarkable resistance or nullification to almost every form of damage, except when he is highly heated from traversing lava. This poses a significant obstacle in dealing damage to his 300 hit points, but luckily there is one environmental damage source that Grym is extremely vulnerable to.

Preparing for the Fight

Players must understand several unique features of this fight in order to succeed. Firstly, turning the lava valve causes the lower portions of the forge to be flooded with magma. Only the four circular areas and the short walkways that extend from each one, as well as the mold chamber and the crucible, are safe. Characters can enter the magma, but they will suffer significant fire damage each time they do so.

Secondly, Grym is easily provoked. The golem automatically targets the last creature that successfully attacked it, regardless of whether the attack caused any damage. It will proceed towards the offending creature and attack it if it is within range, while also utilizing Quake as a bonus action every round.

: Taking Advantage of the Provocation Weakness

To maximize their chances of success, players must strategically position the party on each of the four circles, exploiting the enemy's vulnerability to provocation. Achieving this requires the party to be ungrouped, with each member positioned individually. It is crucial to ensure that one party member is standing adjacent to the forge lever. Once everyone is in their designated positions and all buffs and potions have been consumed, it is time to activate the lava valve.

The players' primary objective in this battle is to ensure that Grym remains submerged in magma, effectively maintaining its Superheated state. Without Superheated, Grym becomes impervious to any form of damage. It is crucial to designate a character to constantly stand near the valve, ready to activate it when the magma flow ceases every three rounds.

Players need to lure Grym to the central crucible in the forge. Activating the forge lever will result in a powerful hammer striking the crucible, inflicting significant damage to Grym if it is in its path, even with just one leg. By repeating this process twice, the boss fight will conclude swiftly.

Nevertheless, players must remain cautious as four magma mephits will emerge on the western side of the forge following the initial hammer blow. Although these mephits possess low health, they have the ability to explode upon death, causing fire damage to nearby characters.

One effective spell for this battle is Spiritual Weapon. The summoned weapon is immune to damage from the magma and can provoke Grym, making it a strategic choice for luring Grym onto the crucible. Additionally, if multiple characters stand on the inner side of each circle, it will deceive Grym into moving towards the center since it can target multiple opponents with its Quake ability.

Alternatively, players can attempt to defeat Grym without relying on the forge hammer. This approach increases the difficulty of the boss battle, but it is still achievable. A valuable advantage to consider is that Grym is susceptible to bludgeoning damage, meaning it takes double the normal amount. By utilizing a large hammer, a fighter or barbarian can significantly reduce Grym's hit points with each round of attacks.

Players need to exercise caution when selecting their targets and timing their attacks in order to effectively engage in this type of encounter. The objective is to keep Grym confined to a specific location where it can continuously increase in temperature, while solely focusing on assaulting the characters at the forefront of the battle. Those who successfully achieve this strategy will be rewarded with the exclusive accomplishment known as "A Grym Fate".

Furthermore, the benefits of triumphing in this combat scenario encompass a substantial amount of experience points, the Grymskull Helm (which provides immunity to critical hits, resistance against fire damage, and grants access to Hunter's Mark), as well as an array of adamantine weapons and armor that players can craft to their heart's content.
