Avril Lavigne wants to clear up the rumors about the "dumb" Melissa Vandella conspiracy theory. During her recent interview on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast on Wednesday, May 15, the 39-year-old singer shared her thoughts on the long-standing conspiracy theory. Lavigne finds it amusing how some people believe she looks exactly the same and hasn't aged at all, while others think there's a theory that she is not actually herself.

Lavigne and podcast host Alex Cooper shared a good laugh while discussing the theory. Lavigne mentioned that the theory wasn't too bad and could have been worse. She felt like she got a decent one and didn't find it negative or creepy.

She admitted that the rumor "could be worse," saying, "Obviously, I am me, it’s so dumb."

There are conflicting reports on when the conspiracy theory first surfaced, but it can be traced back to the early 2000s on online forums. For those who may not be aware, there have been persistent rumors circulating for years that Lavigne passed away in 2003, after her first album, Let Go, was released, and has been replaced by a lookalike named Melissa.

The conspiracy theory about Avril Lavigne being replaced gained new attention in 2017 when a thread on X resurfaced, analyzing various supposed signs of the switch. One piece of "evidence" mentioned is a 2004 photo shoot for her album Under My Skin, where the name "Melissa" appears to be written on her hand.

Avril Lavigne has addressed the conspiracy theory multiple times, including in Wednesday's episode of the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. She first discussed the theory back in 2014 during an interview on a Brazilian TV show, where she revealed that she had not heard about the theory before.

"Well, I'm here in Brazil," she mentioned during that moment.

As Lavigne's career progressed, she dismissed the rumor in several interviews. It wasn't until a profile for Galore Magazine in 2022 that she truly began to doubt its accuracy.

She mentioned, "People always say I look exactly the same as I always have. It's funny because everyone comments on how I haven't changed, but then there's this idea that doesn't make sense. And isn't it random? For years, people have brought up this conspiracy theory that I'm not really myself, that I'm a clone or something. It's just the weirdest rumor, I don't understand it."
