Aston Villa have finalized the acquisition of centre-back Pau Torres from Villarreal, a Spanish team.
Torres joins from Unai Emery's previous club in a transfer deal worth £33m, making it the second-costliest transaction in Aston Villa's history, trailing only the £38m spent on signing Emiliano Buendia from Norwich in 2021.
The center-back, with one year left on his current contract, featured in 39 games for Villarreal in the previous season. He also represented Spain in the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Torres had a release clause of €70m (£60.4m), but Villa has reportedly negotiated a payment plan that allows them to make initial payments below that amount over an extended period of time.
Unai Emery has shown a strong interest in Torres ever since his comeback to the Premier League. He firmly believes that the inclusion of this defender can elevate the squad to new heights, ultimately solidifying their standing in European football.
