Andy Cohen is acknowledging the origin of the viral cat cafe moment with his friend John Mayer on New Year's Eve.

"He was planning to join us from Tokyo and I suggested, 'We can set you up in your hotel.' But he said, 'I'd rather go somewhere more fun, like a cat cafe.' So I thought, 'Alright, let me see if we can find one,'" Cohen, 55, exclusively tells We on Tuesday, January 9, while promoting Walmart's "Save Your Resolutions" campaign.

After finding a café for Mayer to call from, Cohen informed Anderson Cooper about the amusing location before their CNN New Year’s Eve Live special began. "I mentioned to Anderson a few times, 'Hey, John's going to be at a cat cafe,' but I think he sometimes ignores me, which is why he found it immediately funny," Cohen remembers. "And the fact that the cats kept showing their butts to John the entire time was also hilarious. I think that visual alone was so funny."

There was a viral reaction online when 56-year-old Cooper burst into laughter while 46-year-old Mayer joined the special from a cat café, surrounded by cats - some of which had their backsides in Mayer's face.

"John, this doesn't look very clean," Cohen remarked during the broadcast, while Cooper exclaimed, "John, there are cats all over the place."

Mayer appeared not to be fazed by their alarming reactions, replying, “I believe it passes all health codes. I think it’s just fine.”

He went on, "This is a place where you can come, have a drink or two, and mingle with cats. It's a cat bar. I'm not sure how much clearer I can be about the purpose of this establishment."

Although Mayer has definitely caught the eye of numerous cats, he has not yet found a significant other. When it comes to potentially pairing him with Real Housewives of New York star Brynn Whitfield, Cohen is uncertain if they would be well-suited.

"I attempted to introduce her to Tyler Cameron," Cohen remembers, before suggesting that playing matchmaker for Whitfield, 36, and Mayer "isn't a terrible idea." "I just can't picture John dating someone from a reality show, though."

As Cohen considers the idea, he mentions that Whitfield has "everything" and is "extremely intelligent."

“I think [Mayer] wants someone as smart and as clever as she is and she’s certainly beautiful,” he says. “So … interesting.”
