Alan Ritchson, the star of the TV series Reacher, recently discussed his elimination from American Idol Season 3. This setback led Ritchson to pivot his career from music to acting, ultimately landing the role of Arthur Curry/Aquaman in The CW's 2000s superhero series Smallville.
In addition to his small screen roles in Blue Mountain State, Blood Drive, and Titans, the North Dakota native has also appeared in several films, including The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the recent live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. However, it was his role in Amazon Studios' Reacher that made Ritchson a household name, impressing audiences with his accurate portrayal of Lee Child's formidable hero.
Reacher’s Alan Ritchson was an American Idol dropout
Ritchson’s unfortunate time on American Idol Season 3 is credited with leading to his subsequent success, as the star revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. According to Ritchson, this setback played a crucial role in shaping his future career.
Alan Ritchson, known for his role in "Reacher," advanced to the second round of "American Idol" in 2003. Despite being eliminated, he was inspired by the immense passion people had for their art.
"In 2003, [American Idol] announced auditions for Season 3 in Atlanta," he said. "I advanced to the second round in Los Angeles. Despite being cut, I was captivated by the passion people had for their art. I chose to stay and ended up landing TV commercials and auditions."
Ritchson's remarks to the WSJ demonstrate his newfound openness to discussing his short stint on American Idol. This was evident during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he revealed the manufactured nature of the supposedly unscripted singing competition.
As Ritchson remembers it, the edit of Season 3’s first episode made him look like a slacker, when in reality, he was “helping people” complete a songwriting task.
Alan Ritchson wrote Tom Cruise a letter after replacing him as Reacher
During the interview, Ritchson mentioned that he wrote a "heartfelt" letter to Tom Cruise after taking over the role of Jack Reacher. However, Cruise never received the note because Don Granger, one of Cruise's producing partners, advised Ritchson against sending it.
"[Granger] said, 'We're not going to give it to him. It's a terrible idea,'" said Ritchson. "'He's fine with [the recasting] because he's moved on in life. He's moved on and you need to move on, too.'"
