Fan art envisions Alan Ritchson, known for his role in Reacher, as the ideal actor to portray Guile in a new live-action Street Fighter movie. The 1994 film adaptation of the beloved arcade game, directed by Steven E. de Souza and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, received mixed reviews from critics, obtaining a low 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, with Legendary's recent acquisition of the movie rights and their plans to develop a new adaptation, prospects for the Street Fighter franchise in television and film seem promising. Although specific details about the Legendary version remain scarce, fan artist Boss Logic suggests Ritchson as the ideal candidate for the iconic character Guile, known for his distinctive flat-top hairstyle, reprised by Van Damme in the original film.
In a comment on Boss Logic’s Instagram post, Ritchson himself indicated his interest in making this bit of fancasting a reality, saying “I’m in.”
Street Fighter Is Long Overdue For a Reboot
After the moderate success of the initial Street Fighter movie, plans were made for a sequel featuring Van Damme once again, alongside Dolph Lundgren and Holly Valance. However, this anticipated follow-up was sadly never brought to fruition. Instead, Street Fighter saw its long-awaited sequel in 2009 with the release of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Surprisingly, Van Damme was noticeably absent from the cast, and unfortunately, the film performed dismally at the box office, earning a mere $12.8 million against its $50 million budget.
After the box office failure of the 2009 sequel, Street Fighter ceased to be a live-action franchise. However, given the enduring legacy of the original game and the continued love for its animated adaptations, Legendary has acquired the rights and is moving forward with a new reboot. The actor to star as Guile in the new Street Fighter is yet to be seen, but Reacher's Ritchson would be a perfect fit for the character and has expressed interest in the role. It is even possible for Van Damme himself to make a comeback in a different role, as a tribute to his memorable performance in the 1994 Street Fighter film.
