Dave Filoni's upcoming Star Wars movie, which concludes the post-Return of the Jedi storyline, is anticipated to be an exciting cinematic finale for fans of The Mandalorian.
Concerns about Filoni's Mando-verse movie translating well to cinema were dispelled by the breathtaking visuals of Ahsoka. Although plot details remain unconfirmed, it is highly probable that the film will revolve around Mando, Ahsoka, Boba Fett, and other characters joining forces to defeat the Imperial antagonist, Thrawn. This feature-length film promises to showcase the immense potential of the Mando-verse.
The Star Wars Celebration event in April featured the announcement of a new Star Wars movie, set to be directed by Dave Filoni. While the plot details are being kept secret, the movie is expected to conclude the post-Return of the Jedi storyline that was introduced in The Mandalorian and its related spin-offs. Several other Star Wars films are also in the works, including one focused on Rey's adventures after Rise of Skywalker, a religious epic about the Jedi's beginnings, and a Lando movie. However, Filoni's movie is particularly exciting because it serves as a feature-length finale to The Mandalorian, presented on the big screen. If rumors are accurate, the film may be called Heir to the Empire and could feature Grand Admiral Thrawn as the main villain.
The prospect of seeing characters like Din Djarin, Ahsoka Tano, Grogu, Boba Fett, Bo-Katan, and possibly even Luke Skywalker battling Thrawn in a cinematic setting is truly thrilling. Initially, some concerns arose when Filoni was announced as the director, given his background in television. It was worrisome that the Mando-verse movie might end up feeling like an extended TV episode rather than a grand, cinematic experience suited for the theater. However, the stunning visuals of Ahsoka have alleviated those concerns and demonstrated Filoni's ability to handle the spectacle of the big screen.
Ahsoka's Cinematic Visuals Prove Dave Filoni's Mandalorian Movie Can Be Great
Ahsoka has truly demonstrated the full potential of Filoni's Mandalorian film with its impeccable visual effects and captivating cinematography. Unlike other live-action Star Wars shows, Ahsoka seamlessly utilizes The Volume technology. In contrast, the vast desert landscapes of Tatooine in Obi-Wan Kenobi appear confined to a small area, as the actors are clearly on a soundstage surrounded by TV screens showing an artificial and glossy desert environment. However, in Ahsoka, the spaces never feel restricting. Cinematographers Eric Steelberg and Quyen Tran skillfully shoot the StageCraft action, immersing viewers in the expansive CG settings.
The arrival of Thrawn in "Part Six: Far, Far Away" effectively captures the ominous grandeur of his colossal Imperial Star Destroyer looming over an ancient temple. The evocative lighting and misty atmosphere in the show's lightsaber duels bring to mind the breathtaking samurai swordfights seen in Kurosawa classics. The standout moments in Ahsoka would have been truly mind-blowing on the silver screen. Just imagine witnessing the Clone Wars flashback in a theater, where explosions cut through the literal fog of war, illuminating unsettling glimpses of Vader. Envision Thrawn's magnificent entrance projected onto a 30-foot screen, with the chilling chant of the Night Troopers thundering from industrial-sized speakers.
What Will Dave Filoni's Star Wars Movie Be About?
Similar to other Star Wars films in development, Filoni's Mando-verse movie does not have any confirmed plot details. However, the direction becomes evident when considering The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. The Mandalorian's season 3 finale has changed the status quo, returning Mando and Grogu to their previous lives as bounty hunters. Except now, instead of hunting criminals for the guild, they will be pursuing Imperial scum for the New Republic. One of the Mandalorian spin-offs, Rangers of the New Republic, got canceled after Gina Carano's departure from Lucasfilm. It appears that Mando's collaboration with the New Republic will incorporate the planned Rangers storylines into the flagship series. In the movie, Mando and Grogu might gather every favor possible to track down the most valuable Imperial target of all: Thrawn.
In The Book of Boba Fett, Boba and Fennec abandon their life as crime lords to pursue a greater purpose, potentially involving dismantling the remnants of the evil Empire Boba once served. The Ahsoka series reveals the vast extent of the Imperial Remnants and the devout loyalty the Night Troopers have for Thrawn. Since her live-action appearance in The Mandalorian season 2, Ahsoka has been determined to defeat Thrawn, making her undoubtedly involved in Mando's quest to vanquish the Imperial Remnants. With a full-length movie, there is enough room to include all the familiar characters from the Mando-verse for an epic showdown with Thrawn, even if some only serve as a stepping stone with the help of a star map, Star Wars' new beloved plot device.
Lucasfilm's description of the "climactic story event" suggests that Filoni's movie will be Star Wars' response to Avengers: Endgame. However, it appears to resemble Infinity War, where a diverse group of heroes unite to confront a shared adversary. Filoni's movie has unlimited potential, both in terms of storytelling and visual aesthetics. Judging from the astonishing visuals of Ahsoka, the Mando-verse movie is bound to be visually stunning.
