Spaceman Plot

An astronaut named Jakub is adrift in the cosmos during a solar research mission and realizes he needs to uncover what has gone wrong in his marriage before it's too late.

Spaceman is based on the book 'Spaceman of Bohemia' by Jaroslav Kalfar. It details Jakub's quest in space to fix his marriage. Per Netflix, Jakub has been adrift in space for six months, alone. He soon begins to realize that the broken marriage he has back on Earth will possibly not be there when he returns. 'Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanus (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late,' reads the movie's storyline.

Kalfar explained the concept for the book occurred to him in college when he heard of a story where an astronaut gets a call from his wife asking for a divorce. Netflix's Spaceman explores the concept within a sci-fi setting as Jakub looks to a spider to help.

Spaceman Cast

Adam Sandler leads Spaceman as Jakub, the astronaut, alongside Okja star Paul Dano as Hanus. The cast is impressive as it stars famed Italian model and actor Isabella Rosellini. She will star as Jakub's commanding officer. There is an added level of emotion as Jakub's wife, Lenka, is also pregnant in the movie.

When it comes to Sandler being the lead in Spacemen, director Johan Renck said, 'I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know. I don't think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he's very intelligent, really smart, profound.'

Spaceman Release Date

Spaceman is set to release on Netflix on March 1, 2024. Before the movie airs on Netflix to global audiences, it will be screened first at the 'Berlinale Special' program at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. Spaceman was originally meant to premiere in 2023 but was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes. Netflix calls the movie 'cerebral' and 'mind-bending,' with Kalfar pleased with the movie adaptation.
