Aaron Rodgers addressed the rumors surrounding a possible bong incident at a recent New York Jets game, clarifying that the object in question was not a bong. During his appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show" on November 10, the 39-year-old quarterback explained that he was actually carrying a bottle of Maestro Dobel Tequila, a gift from ESPN Deportes sideline reporter John Sutcliffe each time they meet on Monday night football.
As he prepared to leave the field on Thursday, November 9th, the quarterback recounted an incident involving a British acquaintance, Hugh Coles. Upon hearing his name being called, the quarterback approached Coles to exchange greetings. However, during the interaction, he accidentally dropped a uniquely shaped bottle, causing him to lose half of his tequila. The quarterback expressed gratitude to John for providing the tequila and acknowledged Maestro Dobel, Hugh, and bongs in general, but clarified that the dropped item was not a bong.
Rodgers' video of dropping the object quickly became viral, igniting a frenzy of speculation on the internet. Although some speculated that the athlete had smuggled a bong onto the field, Rodgers expressed his disappointment in the lack of imaginative theories.
Expressing his thoughts on Friday, Rodgers jokingly remarked, "The conspiracy theories are rather underwhelming. I expected something more inventive, like dolphin semen or Giants tears, you know, something more interesting than that."
Sutcliffe, on his part, confirmed Rodgers' account by posting his own version.
"In NY now, had to meet up with my friend @AaronRodgers12 to watch Monday Night Football together and give him a gift @maestrodobelmx @dobeltequila," wrote the sports reporter in Spanish, sharing a video of him and Rodgers via X on Monday, November 6.
Rodgers' debut season with the Jets has gotten off to a rough start. In the opening game of the 2023 season at MetLife Stadium in September, the athlete suffered an ankle injury. It was later confirmed that Rodgers had torn his Achilles tendon.
Taking to Instagram on September 13, Rodgers expressed his gratitude to everyone who had reached out to him through various means of communication. He acknowledged the immense impact their gestures had on him and promised to respond in due time. Breaking his silence on what seemed to be a season-ending injury, he revealed his heartbreaking emotions but also expressed his deep appreciation for the overwhelming support and love he had received.
Rodgers recently mentioned that he was making good progress towards his return to the field. During a conversation with Derwin James, the 27-year-old Los Angeles Chargers safety, James asked Rodgers about his comeback timeline. Rodgers playfully patted James on the back and jokingly replied, "Just give me a couple of weeks."
