Zayn Malik has returned, and this time he's embracing a country sound. Fans had been guessing that Malik, who is 31 years old, was moving away from his pop and R&B style towards something more folk-inspired. He officially started this new chapter on Friday, March 15, by dropping his latest single, "What I Am." This release follows shortly after his announcement that his fourth solo album, Room Under the Stairs, is set to be released on May 17.
Malik’s new song has a laid-back feel with guitars, pianos, and drums. He sings about feeling lost while reading old stuff and not being able to make sense of it. He mentions that no conspiracy can save him and that living in the moment feels good until it hurts and he needs someone.
In the chorus, Malik questions whether it would be strange if he told someone he loved them or if he mentioned something unusual. He emphasizes not to judge him for his words, but to accept him for who he is. Malik expresses that he is staying true to himself, firmly planted with his feet in the sand.
"What I Am" marks a shift from the electronic sound of his previous hit, "Love Like This." It was released in July 2023, showcasing a minimalist drum-and-bass style that highlighted his AutoTuned vocals. While the song didn't make it to the Billboard Hot 100, it did reach No. 26 on the U.K. Singles Chart. The music video has gained 18 million views in the seven months since its debut.
Malik shared the title and artwork of his new project, Room Under the Stars, on Wednesday, March 13. The artwork, inspired by blueprints, depicts a house being built in the countryside, with the room in question serving as a peaceful studio away from the hustle and bustle. Inside this room, two guitars are prominently displayed, hinting at a change in musical direction for the former member of a boy band.
Rumors began swirling among fans that Malik was exploring a new genre after Grammy-winning country music producer Dave Cobb discussed collaborating with him on the upcoming album. Cobb praised Malik's voice, noting that it conveys emotions like love, loss, pain, triumph, and humanity. Together, they co-produced Room Under the Stairs.
Cobb added that Zayn has truly built his own world on this album. He fearlessly expresses himself from the depths of his soul.
In 2023, Malik made an appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. He revealed that he was working on a music project that his fans might not anticipate because it showcases "a different sound for me."
"He also included some personal stories, like real-life experiences and all that," he added. "You can even find mentions of my daughter in there." Malik is a father to 3-year-old Khai from his previous relationship with Gigi Hadid.
His most recent album, Nobody Is Listening, was released in 2021. Following that, he surprised fans with Yellow Tape, a project with a rap influence. Instead of the usual streaming services, Malik opted to share the music directly through a Dropbox link.
