Liam Payne addressed the contentious remarks he made about Zayn Malik during his appearance on Logan Paul's podcast, reflecting on how it transformed his life positively. In a YouTube video titled "I'm Back," released on Saturday, July 8, Payne, 29, candidly shared that he felt the need to take a step back and prioritize self-care as he had started to lose sight of his true identity, an experience he believed his fans could relate to as well.

Payne stated that prior to his break from social media, he had been preparing for his appearance on Paul's "Impaulsive" podcast, which was broadcasted in May 2022. During his interview with Paul, Payne made several controversial remarks, expressing his dislike for former One Direction member Malik and recounting an altercation he had with another member of the group.

In his latest video on Saturday, Payne clarified that he holds Paul and his cohosts, Mike Majlak and George Janko, in high regard and genuinely enjoys their company. However, he felt the need to take responsibility for his statements made during their conversation.

Payne confessed that his words were driven by anger and originated from a negative mindset. Rather than introspecting, he projected his frustrations onto those around him. During his contemplation on his public image, Payne admitted that he had been venting his personal disappointments onto others, as he felt let down by the trajectory of his solo career after the disbandment of One Direction in 2016, following Zayn Malik's departure from the group.

During his podcast appearance, Payne expressed his dislike for Malik due to various reasons, including Malik's past relationship issues with Gigi Hadid and her mother, Yolanda Hadid.

Payne mentioned that if he had gone through similar experiences and personal growth as Malik did, his parents' constant support could be seen as annoying at times. He acknowledged that Malik had a different upbringing in that regard.

Payne also emphasized the importance of understanding the challenges and obstacles Malik faced to reach his current position, and whether or not he genuinely desired to be in that position. Ultimately, Payne believed that it was essential to consider these factors before passing judgment on Malik.

In addition to his feud with Malik, Payne also recounted nearly coming to blows with another member of One Direction backstage.

“There was a backstage altercation where a specific member forcefully pinned me against a wall,” he confided in Paul in 2022. “In response, I warned him that if he didn't release his grip, there could be severe consequences for his ability to use his hands again."

Upon self-reflection, Payne deeply regretted his remarks towards his previous bandmates, particularly considering their unwavering support during his most challenging moments.

"I made a significant remark regarding the One Direction issue, and it was primarily driven by self-preservation at that moment," he disclosed. "Fortunately, the other boys were incredibly supportive during my time of need. They all came to my aid, including Zayn, which is why I expressed my gratitude to him online."

Admitting that it was difficult for him, Payne confessed that he watched the podcast again, only to realize the negative consequences his words had on others.

Reflecting on it, the podcast was, to put it lightly, a major disappointment and not in a positive way. Actually, it’s likely one of those transformative moments that had a profound impact on my life, possibly even saving it.

The singer of "Strip That Down" revealed that after the interview and other public appearances, he took some time off in Louisiana to participate in a 100-day program aimed at self-improvement. Payne, who has consistently opened up about his battles with mental health, alcohol, and drugs, also revealed that he has maintained sobriety for half a year.

Since completing his rehabilitation program, Payne has been open about his journey towards sobriety and the achievements he has made. He expressed gratitude towards his 6-year-old son, Bear, and his former partner, Cheryl Cole, for assisting him in regaining control of his life.

"First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to Bear and Cheryl for allowing me the opportunity to focus on my recovery during that time because it was necessary," he stated in the video clip. "There was no point in trying to be a father when I had nothing valuable to offer. Up until now, I didn't have much to say to him apart from showing him deep care and love, which is undoubtedly the most crucial aspect."
