Summary
Director Zack Snyder is interested in making a Gears of War movie, but the original creator would only agree if Dave Bautista plays the central character, Marcus.
Netflix, which has an established and positive relationship with Snyder, might grant him authority over the Gears of War undertaking. This future endeavor could potentially impact Snyder's intended sequel for Army of the Dead. Netflix might prioritize the Gears of War film above it.
Director Zack Snyder has expressed a desire to make a Gears of War movie. The original creator of the franchise has one condition for the film. The popular Gears of War video game series began in 2006 and plans for a live-action adaptation have been in the works since 2007 when New Line Cinema acquired the film rights. After changing hands, Netflix has now taken on the project, with Dune screenwriter Jon Spaihts penning the script.
In a recent interview with IGN, Snyder discussed his possible interest in directing either a Gears of War or Halo movie, although Halo has already been adapted into a Paramount+ television series. Upon hearing Snyder's comments, the original creator of Gears of War, Cliff Bleszinski, took to Twitter to express his approval, but only if Dave Bautista is cast as the main character, Marcus.
Thankfully, it wouldn't take much to convince Bautista to take on the role, as he has already expressed great interest in directing the movie. Please see Snyder's original comments below:
Well, there are many ideas that have been discussed. Gears of War has always been a topic of conversation within our group. Personally, I am a fan of the game, so that's one idea that comes to mind. I have also always been intrigued by the Halo franchise. They have already made adaptations of it, but I have always believed it could be something truly extraordinary.
Why Zack Snyder's Chances Of Making Gears Of War Are High
Based on these recent comments, it appears that Netflix will likely choose Snyder to lead their Gears of War project. After securing an exclusive first-look deal with the streaming giant, the Rebel Moon director has expressed great satisfaction with his collaboration with Netflix, citing the creative freedom they offer. With Netflix already planning to release Snyder's two-part Star Wars inspired Rebel Moon and potentially bringing him back for a sequel to Army of the Dead, it is clear that they have a strong belief in his abilities. Additionally, Snyder's positive working relationship with Bautista makes him a natural choice to direct the former WWE and Guardians of the Galaxy star in the potential lead role.
If Netflix does give Snyder control of Gears of War, it could have positive effects on his planned Army of the Dead sequel, Planet of the Dead. Snyder previously stated that Planet of the Dead would be his next priority after Rebel Moon, but Netflix may prioritize Gears of War. Regardless, Netflix will likely have an easier time bringing this project to life compared to previous attempts by other studios, given the director and potential lead already showing interest in working on the film.
