X-Men '97 will continue from where the previous animated series left off in multiple ways. As per a source at San Diego Comic-Con, the series will include a reference to the iconic show.
X-Men: The Animated Series served as a formative introduction to the Marvel Comics team for many individuals. While the live-action X-Men movies released in the early 2000s showcased Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in their memorable roles, the animated series delved into a wider range of characters from the comics and delivered a more faithful portrayal. It notably provided an authentic rendition of the Dark Phoenix Saga and explored the origins of Apocalypse, which differed visually and fundamentally from the 21st Century Fox films. With five seasons under its belt, the series came to an end in 1997. When the rebooted series premieres, it will feel as though no time has transpired.
During The Comic Circus, new information about X-Men '97 was revealed at the show's panel at this year's Comic Con. An exclusive video was premiered, featuring the X-Men interrogating Dr. Trask, one of the show's antagonists. Cyclops, a character known for his leadership role, delivered a modified version of the famous line "To Me, My X-Men," which has become a beloved catchphrase among fans. In Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3, Cyclops further solidified his position as the mutant squad's leader, granting him the privilege of utilizing this phrase.
Aside from the individuals who have previously claimed ownership of this phrase, fans now also have a stake in it. It serves as a testament to how much this team resonates with loyal readers, particularly given the current state of affairs in the Marvel universe. The X-Men have long been marginalized, both in their own comic books and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Due to their association with Fox, the MCU was unable to incorporate them in a substantive manner for quite some time. However, following the merger with Disney, the X-Men comics can finally be adapted in a manner that truly honors the fans.
While there has been no official announcement regarding the fate of any live-action X-Men teams, "X-Men '97" represents a positive step forward. Breathing new life into a beloved cartoon that holds immense nostalgic value for fans is a powerful gesture of goodwill, particularly when accompanied by the return of classic X-Men villains and characters. With any luck, the X-Men's eventual inclusion in the MCU canon will be just as promising.
X-Men '97 is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in late 2023 or early 2024.
