San Diego Comic-Con has gained a reputation for showcasing upcoming projects from various studios, and Marvel Studios has been a significant contributor to this trend. However, this year, the company took an unexpected approach when it came to their Hall H presentation.
During last year's SDCC, Marvel Studios made a monumental announcement by unveiling not just one, but the next three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This included exciting previews of the upcoming Avengers movies and a highly emotional trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The opportunity for fans to engage with the studio and gain insights into the future projects is undoubtedly a thrilling experience. Additionally, it serves as a platform for Marvel Studios to generate excitement and anticipation among fans for their upcoming ventures.
However, Marvel Studios is set to make a grand appearance at Hall H, just like they have done in previous years. Despite this, Marvel will also maintain a presence on the convention floor. Several of Marvel Studios' projects, such as the Thunderbolts movie, Blade, Daredevil: Born Again, and Wonder Man, have experienced production delays due to the ongoing writers' strike. As a result, Marvel Studios will be unable to provide significant updates or exclusive glimpses into these productions. According to The Wrap, Universal and HBO may follow Marvel Studios' lead and also choose to abstain from participating.
Furthermore, a potential strike poses a significant threat to the future productions of Marvel Studios and could be a contributing factor to their absence at SDCC. Currently, the Screen Actors Guild – also known as SAG-AFTRA – is engaged in negotiations for a new contract with various studios, which must be finalized by June 30th. In the event that an agreement is not reached, actors may choose to go on strike. This would result in their inability to provide services for the studios, including participating in events such as SDCC 2023. Consequently, if SAG-AFTRA proceeds with a strike, the impact on Marvel Studios' SDCC presentation would be underwhelming, particularly following the tremendous success of last year's blockbuster presentation. Furthermore, these same circumstances may prompt other studios to reconsider their participation in SDCC.
Disney's recent decision to postpone several projects, including the upcoming Avengers movies, is a direct result of the ongoing writers' strike and the looming potential SAG-AFTRA strike. While there is still hope for a resolution in the near future, it may be too late for Marvel Studios and other studios to showcase their latest offerings at SDCC. This unfortunate development is sure to disappoint fans eagerly anticipating the event, although Marvel Studios will still manage to maintain a presence on the convention floor.
