Wizards Of The Coast Stands Firm Against AI, Counters Allegations Over Latest Magic The Gathering Promo

Wizards of the Coast maintains their firm opposition to AI technology, countering allegations surrounding their latest Magic: The Gathering promo This captivating image showcases the introduction of exciting new cards for the beloved card game

The accusation of using AI-created images has resurfaced for Wizards of the Coast, this time with allegations that the company used AI to prompt cards for Magic: The Gathering, rather than for a Dungeons and Dragons book. On January 4, the official Magic: The Gathering Twitter account shared a photo with the caption: "It's positively shocking how good these lands look in retro frame. #MTGRavnica".

PCGamer has revealed that shortly after the original tweet, suspicions arose about the company using AI once again to promote its products. One user commented, "This looks very AI generated -- with some human photoshopping over the top." Numerous replies echoed this sentiment.

Following the controversy, Magic: The Gathering issued a follow-up post addressing the accusations with the statement:

In response to fans' concerns, we want to assure everyone that the art in question was created by talented human artists, not generated by AI. We are committed to maintaining the integrity of our card art and will continue to prioritize human creativity in our designs. Thank you for your continued support.

"We are updating our artist guidelines to explicitly state that AI art generation is not permitted in the creation process for developing D&D. Despite false accusations, En World faced damage to its reputation due to past actions."

Since then, Wizards of the Coast has reiterated its commitment to not using AI by making a public statement on their blog: "We expect artists, writers, and creatives involved in creating Magic TCG to avoid using AI generative tools in the production of final Magic products."

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan of Magic: The Gathering, I'm glad that Wizards of the Coast is standing firm against the use of AI in creating card art. AI-generated images often lack the creativity and soul that human artists bring to their work, and I believe that using AI would diminish the artistic integrity of the game. I appreciate that Wizards of the Coast is committed to maintaining the high quality of their card art and prioritizing human creativity.

However, I do understand the concerns of some fans who believe that Wizards of the Coast may have used AI in the past without being transparent about it. The company's initial response to the allegations was somewhat defensive, and it took them a few days to issue a more detailed statement. This lack of transparency has eroded some of the trust that fans have in Wizards of the Coast. In the future, I hope that the company will be more open and honest with its fans about its use of AI and other technologies.
