During an episode of Welcome to Wrexham season 2, which premiered on Tuesday, October 17, actor Will Ferrell visited Wales to meet Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham football club. In a lighthearted manner, Ferrell jokingly asked the football players if they liked Ryan and Rob or not. He further added that Rob is good, but jokingly referred to Ryan as a "dodgy Canadian."
During the stadium tour, Ferrell referred to the players as "celebrities" and made a remark about a player's robust thigh.
"Do you require a massage?" he inquired of a Wrexham player. "My hands possess a special enchantment."
FX/YoutubeWrexham manager Phil Parkinson referred to Ferrell’s appearance as “surreal,” noting that they just hung out and “had a chat.”
During the remaining part of the episode, viewers witnessed Wrexham's participation in a total of nine matches over the course of a month, all in their pursuit to ascend to the English Football League. The conclusion of the episode unveils their triumph in seven out of the nine matches.
"Having successfully endured a series of nine matches in a span of 28 days, Wrexham now enjoys a four-point advantage over their rivals, Notts County, with only 10 matches remaining," read the scrolling text across the screen. "The forthcoming six weeks will ultimately determine whether their aspiration of promotion becomes a reality or if they will continue to face the agonizing plight of fifteen years in the National League."
Spoiler alert: In April of this year, Wrexham achieved promotion to the English Football League for the first time in 15 years.
"During this moment, Rob and I experienced a sort of blackout, yet it is a memory that will always remain etched in our minds," Reynolds, aged 46, wrote in the caption of an Instagram post.
Wrexham's promotion was ultimately facilitated by the assistance of veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster, who returned from retirement in Tuesday's release of the second episode of Welcome to Wrexham. According to Aidan Davis, the goalkeeping coach, Foster's inclusion in the team was comparable to Reynolds and McElhenney, both 46, signing "the Tom Brady."
“Occasionally, throughout a season or a player's career, there are individuals who possess that elusive touch of enchantment,” expressed McElhenney during his personal confession. Reynolds acknowledged, “That athlete is none other than Ben Foster.”
Ryan Reynolds and Christopher Furlong/Getty Images were met with public scrutiny from football fans when Foster signed with Wrexham, with many accusing them of being motivated solely by money. However, Foster was quick to clarify that his main intention was to assist Wrexham in achieving promotion to the next league.
Prior to his debut match, Foster confessed to feeling "nervous" due to the scrutiny he was facing. Nonetheless, Wrexham emerged victorious with a 3-0 win against York City.
In a post-game interview, Foster declared, "I commenced my career here and now, I intend to conclude it here. It encapsulates the complete journey of football."
