The Diablo franchise has made a comeback with Diablo 4, and it appears to be addressing past mistakes, receiving praise from fans already. However, its microtransaction model has raised concerns. The game will feature a cash shop offering unique cosmetics, but they come with a high price and no in-game earning option. While similar to other Blizzard games, some of the most desirable cosmetics may only be available through payment, which could negatively impact the game. Introducing World of Warcraft's Trading Post to the Diablo franchise may offer a solution.
WoW's Trading Post Explained
In an effort to regain player interest, Blizzard has decided to revamp their approach to the cash shop in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. In the past, players had to pay extra for access to certain cosmetic items, but now the Trading Post feature offers a new way for gamers to earn these items simply by playing the game. Each month, players have access to a diverse catalog of cosmetics, including armor sets, weapons, mounts, and pets. By completing tasks in their Traveler's Log, players can earn Trader's Tender, which can be exchanged for any cosmetic item they desire. Additionally, players who complete enough tasks in a given month will receive a free bonus cosmetic item.
This new Trading Post feature not only makes store cosmetics accessible to a wider audience, but also introduces one of the game's first evergreen content after 18 years. Although not without flaws, it has proven to be a valuable addition. The existence of World of Warcraft's cash shop remains, but the availability of these items in-game, along with a plethora of other cosmetics, is now a possibility.
Diablo 4 Needs Its Own Trading Post
One aspect of Diablo 4 that may concern some players is the presence of a cash shop. Currently, the only way to obtain the game's premium currency, Platinum, is by entering a credit card number. This means that players who are not willing or able to spend extra money will not have access to the coolest armor sets. However, some players hope that a Trading Post will be implemented in the future, which could potentially allow for more ways to earn Platinum in-game.
The Trading Post in Diablo 4 could take inspiration from World of Warcraft's version, allowing players to earn currency by logging in and completing tasks tied to everyday activities. The post would offer a variety of cosmetics, including new items, older Diablo game items, and cash shop cosmetics. Upon completing their monthly Traveler's Log, players would earn an additional cosmetic, resulting in an overflowing collection of cosmetics for every player. While Blizzard has yet to confirm any plans for this feature, the potential for a Trading Post system in Diablo 4 is significant and could greatly enhance the game's experience.
Diablo 4 will be available on June 6 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
