Ubisoft's announcement of several new Assassin's Creed projects has fueled rumors that they are secretly developing a remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. As one of the franchise's most beloved games, it's understandable that the studio would want to capitalize on its success. However, it feels like Ubisoft missed a valuable opportunity with the Black Flag concept.

Rather than remaking Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Ubisoft should have focused on crafting the next installment in the Kenway family's saga. Currently, only Ezio has been the protagonist in multiple mainline entries, but Edward Kenway could have been the perfect successor. His thrilling swashbuckling escapades could have spanned an entire trilogy, potentially surpassing the legendary Ezio trilogy in popularity.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag 2 Was an Easy Win

Following the conclusion of the Ezio trilogy, it seemed that Ubisoft was unsure of how to proceed with the franchise. Although Assassin's Creed 3 provided a satisfactory end to Desmond Miles' storyline, Connor's character lacked the charm of Ezio. The setting was less captivating, the story lacked strength, and overall, it felt lacking. Despite its tremendous success, fans yearned for something fresh, which is where Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag made its entrance.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag took the franchise on a thrilling new pirate adventure on the high seas. While it preserved many elements of the previous games' combat, Ubisoft introduced a completely revamped gameplay loop with naval battles. Players spent more time sailing through vast oceans than engaging in traditional Assassin activities on land, and the protagonist, Edward Kenway, became one of the most captivating characters in the series. Fans immediately embraced this new formula, yet inexplicably, Ubisoft chose to abandon this premise.

Assassin's Creed Unity not only took the series in a new direction with co-op, but also left the entire Kenway family behind. Assassin's Creed Rogue replicated Black Flag's formula, and the Kenways were mentioned in Assassin's Creed Syndicate. However, neither title compared to the fantastic adventures of Black Flag. Rather than exploring what fans loved, Ubisoft attempted to reinvent the franchise with mixed results.

Now, it appears that Ubisoft is finally returning to the franchise's roots with Assassin's Creed Mirage and the rumored Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag remake. Assassin's Creed Mirage embodies everything that fans have been yearning for, while the choice to remake Black Flag seems peculiar. The game is a decade old and still holds up incredibly well, leaving room for a potentially more enjoyable Edward Kenway adventure. It feels too premature to remake the game, especially considering the untold stories of the Kenway family.
