The Outlast Trials breathes new life into the franchise by introducing a multiplayer survival horror game. Players are taken to an experimental torture facility owned by Murkoff Corporation where they undergo trial-based therapy to be reborn again. To complete each trial, players must solve puzzles, perform tasks, and find essential items while being subjected to violence from the area's monsters.
As with previous Outlast games, fighting is not a viable option, and players must rely on evasion and hiding to avoid being attacked. To assist them in their efforts, players can equip Rigs, which provide special abilities to their loadout. However, Rigs are only available after completing a few tasks, making it critical to understand how to unlock them in The Outlast Trials.
Rigs are equipment designed to provide players with an advantage during trials. These can be obtained from the main terminal located inside The Sleep Room at Murkoff's facility, where players stay between trials. The Outlast Trials features four types of Rigs which are as follows:
1. Stun Rig: This type of rig is equipped with a projectile that releases an electric shock, temporarily stunning and disorienting enemies.
2. Blind Rig: The Blind Rig is equipped with a landmine that releases a temporary blinding smoke when triggered by enemies.
3. Heal Rig: This Rig is equipped with a gas that emits a healing agent, which restores health to players and their co-op partners.
4. X-Ray Rig: This Rig gives players the ability to see through walls, allowing them to spot enemies and potential threats.
Players can acquire Rigs by purchasing them from Cornelius Noakes, the Engineer in the facility. However, they must first reach Therapy Level 2, which can be achieved by earning XP during trials. While completing a trial rewards the highest amount of XP, even failing can earn small amounts of XP. For example, successfully completing the first trial, Kill the Snitch in The Outlast Trials, will increase players' Therapy Level to 2.
The Engineer can be found down the hallway to the left of the Murkoff Facility's main terminal, inside the Bingo Fuel Garage. To locate him, players can simply follow the floor markings. Rigs can be purchased using the ticket earned each time the Therapy Level increases. Once a Rig is purchased, players can access it in their loadout and use it during trials. For those who want to learn more about each Rig, optional tutorial modules are available outside the Bingo Fuel Garage.
Rigs are consumable items that have limited use. However, players can find Rig Recharges scattered around the map during trials, inside lockboxes, cabinets, tool kits, and other similar locations. Much like Antidotes and Batteries, players can access these Rig Recharges by accessing their inventory.
Players who possess multiple Rigs are limited to using only one at a time during a trial. However, they do have the option to swap them out at the main terminal when needed. It is worth mentioning that The Outlast Trials is currently in Early Access on PC.
