In December, Disney's CEO, Bob Iger, revealed plans to launch a beta app that seamlessly combines Disney+ and Hulu for subscribers of both services. This announcement was first made during Disney's second-quarter earnings call in May. During the company's earnings call for the September quarter, Iger confirmed that they are still on track to release a unified one-app experience domestically, offering a wide range of general entertainment content to Disney+ bundle subscribers.
The Hulu on Disney+ app, known as the beta version, is set to offer subscribers an early preview of the integrated platform. This release window is considered significant by Iger, who highlights the importance of allowing parents time to set up parental controls. The official launch is expected to take place in spring 2024.
Currently, Disney is in the process of finalizing the acquisition of NBCUniversal's 33% stake in Hulu. This deal involves a substantial financial commitment, with Disney prepared to pay at least $8.61 billion to Comcast for the Hulu stake. The final amount will be determined based on an evaluation of Hulu's market value by respective bankers, as stated in a recent filing.
Iger stated his belief that the inclusion of Hulu on Disney+ will lead to heightened engagement, expanded advertising possibilities, decreased customer turnover, and lowered costs for acquiring new customers, ultimately resulting in improved overall margins.
This strategic decision is in line with Disney's dedication to strengthening its streaming business, which has exhibited favorable growth. In the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023, Disney+ achieved a total of 150.2 million subscribers. Iger envisions the streaming business attaining profitability by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024.
Hulu stands out from the rest with its vast selection, including the FX streaming library, its own original content like The Handmaid's Tale, and the exciting premiere of the Goosebumps reboot, which is also available on Disney+.

As a passionate fan of both Disney+ and Hulu, I am thrilled about the upcoming launch of their combined app. This move makes perfect sense, as it will provide subscribers with a more streamlined and convenient viewing experience. No longer will we have to toggle between two different apps to access our favorite content. With everything in one place, it will be easier to discover new shows and movies that we might not have otherwise found.
I also appreciate that Disney is taking the time to release a beta version of the app before the official launch. This will allow users to test out the new features and provide feedback, which will help Disney to make the app even better before it is released to the general public. Overall, I believe that this merger is a positive development for both Disney+ and Hulu subscribers, and I can't wait to see how the new app turns out.
