Unveiling the Untold Secrets: Why 'Superman: Legacy' Dares to Rewrite Clark Kent's Origin Story

James Gunn reveals the bold move in Superman: Legacy, bypassing Clark Kent's origin story, adding depth and freshness to the legendary superhero's narrative Starring Rachel Brosnahan, this film promises a unique perspective on Superman's journey

James Gunn provides more insight into why Clark Kent's origin story will not be included in Superman: Legacy for the upcoming DC Universe reboot. The DCEU is concluding its decade-long run to make way for the new DC Universe, overseen by co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran. Superman: Legacy will serve as the inaugural film for Chapter 1, titled "Gods and Monsters," alongside multiple other DC Universe projects currently in the works. Despite this fresh start, Gunn has already expressed his intention to steer clear of a traditional Superman origin narrative. In a recent statement shared via @HomeOfDCU, Gunn further explains the reasons behind this decision on Bluesky.

How Skipping Clark Kent's Origin Story Helps Superman: Legacy Standout

DC Studios has recently announced that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will be portraying the iconic roles of Superman and Lois Lane in their upcoming film. Titled Superman: Legacy, the film is set to begin production in 2024 and still has several other characters yet to be cast.

Unveiling the Untold Secrets: Why 'Superman: Legacy' Dares to Rewrite Clark Kent's Origin Story

Superman's origin story has been retold numerous times, more often than most other DC characters. The movies, Superman: The Movie and Man of Steel, have depicted Clark's discovery of his Kryptonian heritage and his transformation into the world's greatest protector. However, given the widespread familiarity with Superman's origin, it is unnecessary for Superman: Legacy to find another way to recount it.

Smallville, a show that aired for a whole decade, also delved into Clark's journey to becoming Superman. As other Superman movies and TV shows have already extensively explored Clark's pre-superhero days, Superman: Legacy is drawing inspiration from The Batman and Superman & Lois, focusing on established heroes.

Nonetheless, this doesn't mean that Superman: Legacy cannot reference events from Clark's life before he put on the suit. In potential future sequels of Superman: Legacy, flashbacks could be included if they hold significant importance for the DC Universe. Hopefully, Gunn will provide more information about the Superman: Legacy reboot and its direction in the near future.
