Persona 5: The Phantom X introduces a new feature that allows the player character, Wonder, to wear different outfits outside of the Metaverse.
Previous Persona games allowed players to dress their characters in cosmetic outfits, albeit only during dungeons. However, it remains uncertain whether the outfits in Wonder will be visible in pre-rendered 2D anime cutscenes or in-engine cutscenes when not in the Metaverse.
Persona 5: The Phantom X recently introduced an exciting new feature that allows the player character, Wonder, to wear various outfits outside of the Metaverse. Unlike previous Persona games where characters were limited to one or two outfits, Persona 5: The Phantom X offers players the opportunity to dress their characters in alternate costumes, including DLC costumes from Persona 5 and Persona 4 Golden's costume store. It's important to note that these outfit changes are purely cosmetic and can only be worn while exploring the game's dungeons.
Persona 5: The Phantom X is a mobile and PC spin-off announced in March. Developed in partnership with Perfect World Games and Black Wings Game Studio, the game is exclusively released in China. In this spin-off, players assume the role of Wonder, a newly introduced Phantom Thief, as they venture to change the hearts of villains and conquer their Palaces within the Metaverse. The objective of the game is to maintain the original gameplay experience of Persona 5 while adapting it for mobile gaming. Several alterations have been made to the formula, including the ability to wear different casual clothes outside of the Metaverse.
Twitter user Faz highlighted this feature by sharing GIFs of Phantom X protagonist Wonder wearing different outfits outside of the Metaverse. One outfit includes a yellow jacket, white shirt, and striped pants, while another features a gray jacket and black slacks. In one GIF, Wonder is seen in Tokyo wearing the second outfit, and another GIF showcases how he can access his closet to change clothes. A third outfit is shown where Wonder replaces his jacket with a black-and-white hoodie.
Similar to the equippable costumes in Persona 5, these outfits in Phantom X seem to be purely cosmetic changes. However, unlike the costumes, these outfits can be worn outside of the Metaverse. It is worth noting that in some parts of Phantom X, pre-rendered 2D anime cutscenes depict Wonder in his default outfit. While it is possible that these scenes occur before he unlocks the wardrobe, some fans are curious if there will be more 2D animated scenes that feature his starting outfit.
Many of the cutscenes in Phantom X display the game being rendered within the game engine, away from the Metaverse. This suggests that Wonder's outfits might be visible in these instances. Later this August, during the second beta of Persona 5: The Phantom X, some fans may have the opportunity to witness how these outfits work in real-time. At present, Persona 5: The Phantom X is being developed for both PC and mobile devices.
