Summary
Star Trek: Picard season 3 episode 6 highlights the need for more levity in Captain Seven of Nine's character in the proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy.
Jeri Ryan's infectious laughter, which is prominently featured in the commentary tracks, is noticeably absent from Seven of Nine's typically serious demeanor in Star Trek: Picard.
Granting Seven of Nine the opportunity to exhibit more humor and embrace a lighter side as the Captain of the Enterprise could potentially bring a fresh and captivating aspect to her character in Star Trek: Legacy.
In Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 6, the Fleet Museum visit offers a glimpse into a potential improvement for Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in the proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy. The Blu-ray and DVD release of Picard season 3 includes special features such as commentary tracks with Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner, Michelle Hurd, Ed Speleers, and Todd Stashwick, who join showrunner Terry Matalas in discussing key episodes and providing fans with an intimate experience with the Picard cast.
Seven of Nine's story in Star Trek: Picard goes beyond the conclusion of Star Trek: Voyager, where she was initially rescued from the Borg. Joining forces with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) gave Seven a renewed purpose and a newfound family. Eventually, Seven became the First Officer of the USS Titan-A, despite facing challenges in her relationship with Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick). Her bravery and strength of character led to her promotion to Captain. The conclusion of Picard season 3 sets the stage for the spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, with Seven as the Captain of the USS Enterprise-G.
Star Trek: Picard Season 3’s Starfleet Museum Visit Shows What Seven Of Nine Could Be
During the visit of USS Titan-A to the Fleet Museum to recruit Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Seven and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) engage in a conversation about the vintage starships exhibited there, including Seven's former home, the USS Voyager. This particular moment in Star Trek: Picard season 3 showcases Seven in a relaxed and playful state as she playfully mocks Jack for his ability to observe poetically, a trait reminiscent of his father, Jean-Luc Picard. Terry Matalas and other viewers noted in the commentary track that it's a pity fans don't often get to experience Jeri Ryan's infectious laughter due to the serious nature of Seven's character.
On the Star Trek: Picard season 3 commentary tracks, Jeri Ryan exuberantly engages in joking and teasing with her co-stars, frequently erupting into fits of laughter and giggles. This lightheartedness is a characteristic that was missing from Seven of Nine's persona. Throughout Star Trek: Picard, Seven's character was primarily defined by the challenges she faced, such as confronting Romulans in the artifact in season 1, pursuing the hybrid Borg Queen (Allison Pill/Annie Wersching) in season 2, and engaging in phaser battles with Changelings and Borg in season 3. However, Star Trek: Legacy offers a valuable opportunity to present a different side of Seven of Nine.
Captain Seven Of Nine Needs More Levity In Star Trek: Legacy
In Star Trek: Legacy, Captain Seven of Nine should exhibit a touch of humor. After all, she delivered one of the most amusing one-liners in Star Trek: Picard season 3 by saying, "The robot's right!" to Data (Brent Spiner). This doesn't mean that Seven should transform into a comedic character, but as the Captain of the Enterprise, she has earned the right to showcase her wit and enjoy herself. Despite the pressures of commanding the United Federation of Planets' flagship, Seven's past hardships are now behind her. She is surrounded by trusted loved ones such as Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) and close friends like Ensign Jack Crusher and Lt. Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut).
Allowing more of Jeri Ryan's real-life persona and her laughter to influence Seven of Nine would be just as successful as Jonathan Frakes merging his own personality with Captain William T. Riker. Frakes received acclaim for embodying the best version of Riker in Star Trek: Picard season 3 because he and Riker became intertwined. Embracing this same alchemy with Seven of Nine being more like Jeri Ryan would introduce a refreshing new aspect to the Captain of the Enterprise and bring a bit more enjoyment to her leading role in Star Trek: Legacy.
Star Trek: Picard – The Final Season is now available on DVD, Blu-ray™, and a limited-edition Blu-ray SteelBook from Paramount Home Entertainment. Additionally, you can now get your hands on Star Trek: Picard – The Complete Series.
