Daryl Dixon, executive producer Greg Nicotero, spoke about the similarities between the new spinoff of The Walking Dead and The Last of Us. In this new series, Daryl finds himself in France and is given the task of escorting a young boy, Laurent, across the country to save humanity, as requested by a group of survivors. This storyline resembles Joel's journey in The Last of Us, where he travels with Ellie, a young survivor who is immune to the Cordyceps infection.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Nicotero acknowledged the similarities between The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Last of Us. However, he also discussed the distinguishing factors that set these two shows apart, despite sharing story elements. Read what Nicotero had to say below.
I distinctly recall watching the initial episode of The Last of Us and having a thought of confusion, like, 'Um...guys?' At that point, we were already heavily involved in the production process. I immensely enjoyed The Last of Us.
In essence, it serves as a continuation of Daryl's narrative. While he is determined to transport this child, it is not his sole objective. His true purpose lies in reuniting with his loved ones back home. He is driven to reconnect with Judith, Carol, and the individuals residing at the Commonwealth. Unexpectedly, he finds himself diverted to France, which I believe resembles a detour that blindsided him. Despite the initial impression that there may be a resemblance to The Last of Us in their connection, as the journey progresses, it becomes apparent that they are distinct enough to appreciate separately.
Why Daryl Dixon Will Feel Different From The Last Of Us
According to Nicotero, Daryl Dixon's storyline in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is a continuation within the larger zombie universe of the show. Despite the similarity of Daryl delivering Laurent across France to The Last of Us, his ultimate objective remains getting back home to Virginia, in addition to his new mission. While Daryl is bound to form a connection with Laurent, their journey is expected to be distinct from the original series.
Unlike Joel and Ellie, whose journey spanned the United States, Daryl and Laurent will navigate through France. This change in location opens up numerous possibilities for unexpected and exciting adventures that may not have been possible in America. Additionally, unlike Ellie, Laurent is being pursued by a mysterious faction of survivors with sinister intentions. The introduction of this antagonistic group serves to highlight the distinctiveness of the show compared to The Last of Us.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon introduces acid zombies and different possible variants, adding a distinct peril to his journey through France. Although The Last of Us also had various infected, Daryl's series appears to be approaching the idea with its own unique perspective. The true extent of the differences between The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Last of Us will only become clear after the former's premiere. However, it seems that any similarities between the two were merely coincidental.
