The Circle of Needle consists of Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Luis Carazo, Brennan Lee Mulligan, and Zehra Fazal. Making his debut as Game Master is Spenser Starke, one of the designers behind Candela Obscura, while Taliesin Jaffe reprises his role as the trusted lightkeeper. Unveiling the Spellbinding Secrets of Critical Role's Candela Obscura Chapter 2 & Character Inspirations

Screen Rant: What was the inspiration for your character, and what did you want to explore that is different from other characters you have created?

Marisha Ray: There is something admirable about those who strive to maintain a positive outlook even in the face of terrifying circumstances. While we were creating our characters together, it became evident that our group needed someone who could seek out purpose in the midst of darkness. Without that balance, we risked falling into a relentless cycle of negativity, questioning the point of it all.

However, we must also acknowledge the flaws inherent in what some may view as overly optimistic behavior. Aunt Beatrix quickly emerged as a character who encapsulated these considerations. Additionally, I found it intriguing to portray a maternal figure for the first time. It was a rich experience bringing to life an older, wiser woman who has faced her fair share of tragedy in Newfaire. Yet, she possesses a certain clarity that comes from having emerged on the other side. As long as Aunt Bee feels that she has people who rely on her, she is able to persevere, no matter how dire and desperate the situation may be.

You have been heavily involved in the entire process, from game development and playtesting, to show development, and now starring in Chapter 2. What aspect of this journey has surprised you the most?

Marisha Ray: It's truly astonishing to witness how effortlessly everyone grasps the task at hand now that we have completed the development phase. There is a seamless and intuitive flow of creativity when we come together in a room, aligning perfectly on the narrative we aim to convey. For me, this truly speaks volumes about the remarkable ability of the world creators and the system to effectively communicate the essence of Candela to both players and, by extension, the audience.

Which other genres would you be interested in exploring using the Illuminated Worlds system?

Marisha Ray: Countless genres! I'm open to any and all of them. The Illuminated Worlds system is truly versatile and perfect for placing ordinary individuals in extraordinary situations. Are you interested in gritty space horror? Fantastic! How about a modern supernatural crime drama? Absolutely! Even a story about a group of anchovies trying to flee from the belly of a whale? I'm game!

Content must be written in English:

Travis is known for his aversion to horror, getting scared by both the haunted house and jump scares from you and Matt during the game. What has been the most enjoyable aspect of playing with him in this horror genre?

Marisha Ray: There are always two things to watch when it comes to horror-based entertainment. The unfolding story at the table, and Travis's reaction to it. It's truly a delight!

The intensity of this chapter in Candela Obscura surpasses any previous projects in Critical Role. There have been numerous significant and intense moments in the past, but this chapter takes it to another level. It demonstrates the understanding and commitment of everyone involved in the project. Personally, I am drawn to the horror genre because it provides a platform to delve into profound societal and systemic issues through allegories. The genre allows us to explore these thought-provoking aspects more deeply and without reservation. However, it is important to note that our other shows also offer ample opportunities to delve into complex and nuanced topics. Candela Obscura simply allows us to do so more overtly.

Did you learn anything from the first chapter of Candela Obscura that influenced your approach to Chapter 2?

Marisha Ray: The stark contrast between The Circle of the Vassal and the Veil and The Circle of Needle and Thread truly highlights the wide range of stories and themes that can be explored in this setting. Chapter 1 follows a more conventional cosmic horror investigation, while Chapter 2 completely changes the game and boldly declares, "Watch me defy expectations!"

This game creates a unique experience where players must confront the consequences of their choices, unlike in D&D. How does that affect your approach as a player?

Marisha Ray: When playing Candela, you need to be aware that there is a high chance your character won't survive, and that's perfectly acceptable. In fact, it's the whole point. Bold and unconventional actions are highly rewarded in this game, both strategically and in terms of storytelling. There isn't a predefined set of solutions like in D&D, where you can simply use Turn Undead to deal with ghosts. Instead, you have to carefully observe and interpret the contextual clues provided by the game, which encourages players to take risks.

Can you discuss the dynamic at the table with Spenser Starke as the Dungeon Master and many members of the Calamity crew reunited, including Brennan Lee Mulligan sitting across from us?

Marisha Ray: Wow, everyone is absolutely delightful. It's truly an invigorating feeling to be at a table that offers such comfort and allows us to be open and vulnerable. Spenser does an incredible job and creates a safe environment that isn't afraid to explore some deeply intense themes. The Calamity crew is no stranger to that, so it was wonderful to reunite and dive back into the tragic adventures. Ha!
