WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody." The conclusion of the musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody," in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has hinted at another tragic event in Captain Christopher Pike's future, before his accident in Star Trek: The Original Series. In the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, it was revealed that Pike already has knowledge of the sacrifice he will eventually make. The crossover episode in Strange New Worlds also suggests that Pike is revered in the 24th Century, as Ensign Brad Boimler confesses to dressing up as him for Halloween. However, these are the only pieces of information Pike has about his future.
For instance, Pike is unaware that Commander Spock will risk his career in order to transport Pike to Talos IV, where he will live a content, but illusory life. Pike also has no knowledge of how his relationship with Captain Marie Batel will unfold. Throughout the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Pike and Batel's relationship faces various challenges. The musical episode presents another hurdle as Pike struggles to be honest with Batel regarding their planned couple's getaway. Though they manage to overcome this minor crisis, the musical episode hints at a potentially fatal mission for Captain Pike's girlfriend in the season 2 finale.
Strange New Worlds Sets Up A Bad Ending For Captain Batel
In a clip from the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, shown on The Ready Room (via Trek Movie), Captain Pike and the USS Enterprise crew make a distressing discovery. The wreckage of Batel's starship, the USS Caguya, is found, and attempts to establish contact with the planet fail. Pike gathers his command crew to consider options for a rescue mission. The previously released trailer for Strange New Worlds season 2 hinted at Batel's fear upon encountering a powerful-looking starship, which is now revealed to belong to the Gorn.
The ongoing Gorn war, which breaks Star Trek canon, was initially teased in the season 2 premiere and has been gradually unfolding. In episode 6 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, titled "Lost in Translation," the deuterium refinery was situated on the outskirts of Gorn territory. This suggests that Batel and her crew may have become the first casualties in a conflict with the Gorn Hegemony. There is hope that Pike and the Enterprise crew can save them from a gruesome fate at the hands of the brutal Gorn, but based on Star Trek canon, it is uncertain if Batel's story will have a happy ending.
Star Trek TOS Already Established Captain Pike And Batel Don’t Last
Fleet Captain Pike of Star Trek: The Original Series appears to be single in "The Menagerie". Upon arriving at Starbase 11, it is suggested that Pike resides there alone, which indicates a separation between him and Batel. Perhaps, their relationship did not work out and Pike, not wanting to burden her with his tragic fate, decided to distance himself from her.
Alternatively, in the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Batel could meet a tragic end at the hands of the Gorn, leaving Pike uncertain about his own future. Hopefully, there is a happier resolution in store for Batel and her crew. Maybe Pike, armed with knowledge of his inevitable accident, will be inspired to think outside the box. If he knows that his tragedy is predetermined, he may be willing to take risks and sacrifice himself to save Captain Batel from the Gorn.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 2 finale streams Thursday, August 10th, on Paramount+.
