Hollywood is facing a halt in numerous projects due to strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions for fair compensation and contract negotiations. Despite this, exciting casting announcements have been made for movies such as Superman: Legacy. Vanity Fair revealed that the upcoming DC Universe film will not only include the new Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lois Lane, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, but also introduce a lineup of new heroes. James Gunn and Peter Safran's reimagining of the DCU will feature characters like Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, a Green Lantern, and Mister Terrific. This marks the first appearance of Mister Terrific in a major DC project on the big screen.
Who Is Mister Terrific In DC Comics?
In DC Comics, multiple individuals have assumed the mantle of Mister Terrific, with a shared attribute being their exceptional intellect. While Mister Terrific possesses athleticism and extensive training as a masked hero, his most formidable superpower lies within his brain.
The original Mister Terrific, Terry Sloane, was brought to life by Charles Reizenstein and Hal Sharp in 1942. As a millionaire with a remarkable photographic memory, Terry possessed both the financial resources and the requisite abilities to support his superheroic endeavors. Inspired by saving a woman's life, he chose to conceal his identity and dedicated himself to preventing young individuals from a life of crime. Terry eventually joined the esteemed Justice Society of America, only retiring when the group faced the decisions of either unmasking themselves to the government or disbanding altogether. Tragically, upon his return from retirement, Terry was ultimately killed in action by an old adversary.
The second incarnation of Mister Terrific draws inspiration from Terry Sloane. Created by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake, Michael Holt made his comic book debut in 1997, a remarkable five decades after the original Mister Terrific. After the devastating loss of his wife and child, Michael contemplated ending his own life, but Terry's enduring legacy inspired him to take on the role of a vigilante. Discovering his purpose as a member of the Justice Society of America, Michael utilized his incredible intellect to create the T-Sphere, an AI embedded within his mask granting him extraordinary abilities. During combat, he can employ multiple T-Spheres simultaneously. Surpassing his predecessor, Michael Holt possesses linguistic fluency, holds an impressive fourteen doctorates in various fields, and has achieved proficiency in six distinct martial arts disciplines. Notably, the revamped Mister Terrific is set to make an appearance in Superman: Legacy.
Who Is Playing Mister Terrific In Superman: Legacy?
Edi Gathegi has been cast as Mister Terrific in Vanity Fair's latest casting announcements. While most TV fans may recognize him from shows like The Blacklist and For All Mankind, Gathegi gained initial fame in Hollywood with his role in Crank back in 2006. However, before stepping into the superhero role, Gathegi made a name for himself in two major movie franchises.
In The Twilight Saga, Gathegi portrayed the vampire character Laurent. Although his role in the films was not extensive, Gathegi displayed his acting prowess as a cunning and memorable character. He also made a noteworthy appearance in X-Men: First Class as Darwin, a superhuman with the unique ability to adapt to any situation. Sadly, both of these intriguing characters met their untimely demise in their respective movies.
Mister Terrific in Superman: Legacy might just be the opportunity Gathegi needs to secure a recurring role in a major franchise. With the recent teasing of the character by James Gunn on social media in 2022, there is a strong possibility that Gathegi could continue portraying the character in the DCU going forward.
Is This The Same Mister Terrific As In The Arrowverse?
Gathegi is set to portray Michael Holt's iteration of Mister Terrific in Superman: Legacy. However, it should be noted that this version of Mister Terrific differs from the one seen in the Arrowverse. In Arrow, the role of Mister Terrific was portrayed by Echo Kellum under the name Curtis Holt. Notably, Curtis Holt was an original character created specifically for the Arrowverse, although he drew inspiration from the comic book character Michael Holt. Fans of Arrow should expect a distinct portrayal of the character as Gathegi brings him to life.
This will mark Gathegi's portrayal of Mister Terrific as the third live-action interpretation of the superhero. Previously, Kellum's iteration of the character was featured in Arrow, while Terry Sloane made a cameo appearance in Smallville. Outside of these appearances, Mister Terrific has only been depicted in video games and animation. As a result, Superman: Legacy has the opportunity to truly make the live-action version of this character stand out. The release of the film is anticipated in 2025.
