Cavill made the decision to step away from his role as Superman in December 2022, which was seven months prior to Corenswet being chosen for the part. The announcement of his departure was conveyed through an Instagram statement by the British actor, who had portrayed the iconic superhero from the 2013 film Man of Steel all the way to 2022’s Black Adam.
"I recently met with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and unfortunately, I have received disappointing news. I will not be reprising my role as Superman," Cavill expressed. "The studio instructed me to announce my return back in October before they made their new hire, so this news is not easy to digest. However, that is just the way life goes."
He further added, "Transition in leadership is a common occurrence, and I understand and respect that. I sincerely wish them and everyone involved in the new universe the best of luck and a bright future."
Gunn clarified that the narrative of the story would be taking a different path. "During the initial phases, we will be zooming in on a earlier period of Superman's life, thus Henry Cavill will not be portraying the character," he disclosed in a statement in December 2022. However, we recently had a productive meeting with Henry and we deeply admire him. We discussed numerous thrilling prospects for future collaborations."
The release date for Superman: Legacy has not been announced at this time.
