Overwatch 2 recently disclosed that an overwhelming majority of attempts, specifically more than 98%, to successfully complete the new PvE Story Missions on Legendary difficulty have resulted in failure. These exceedingly challenging Overwatch 2 PvE missions have proven to significantly impact Blizzard's approach to future co-op content development.
The most recent update for Overwatch 2, titled Season 6: Invasion, stands out as the largest addition of seasonal content thus far. Season 6 brought forth a new hero, PvP mode, and marked the official conclusion of Overwatch 2's Early Access phase. However, one of the most notable highlights of this new season was the introduction of permanent PvE missions within Overwatch 2.
Aaron Keller, the game director for Overwatch 2, recently released a blog post discussing Season 6. In the post, Keller expressed his excitement in sharing some details about the challenging Legendary difficulty of the new Story Missions. "These missions on Legendary are incredibly tough. Extremely tough," he stated. "The majority of players are unable to complete them at this level of difficulty, and those who have succeeded had to develop customized strategies and team compositions to overcome the most difficult encounters." Keller revealed that only 1.6% of players managed to complete the Legendary Gothenburg runs, while a mere 0.7% of attempts to conquer Legendary Toronto were successful.
Keller found joy in observing players take on challenging missions and praised those who succeeded. To all accomplished content creators who completed the Legendary difficulty, Keller commended their exceptional performance and considered them fantastic entertainment. Additionally, Overwatch 2 expressed satisfaction with the diverse levels of mission difficulties. Keller acknowledged that valuable lessons were learned from the current level of difficulty and eagerly anticipated applying and expanding upon these experiences for future Co-op content. This positive development gives hope that future PvE content will further build upon the triumph of Overwatch 2 Season 6: Invasion.
As anticipated, the eagerly awaited and controversial Story Missions have sparked significant discussion. Players have eagerly awaited these PvE missions since their initial announcement alongside Overwatch 2 in 2019. Regrettably, Blizzard's recent decision to reduce the scale of PvE content has ignited considerable controversy, resulting in fans negatively reviewing Overwatch 2 and causing it to become the lowest-rated game on Steam.
Despite some flaws, Overwatch 2’s flagship PvE Story Missions have been widely embraced by core players, who believe they have the potential to be something exceptional. While the missions may not be flawless, some players feel that certain aspects of the original vision were left out. However, the stories and cinematics are captivating, and although the missions themselves lack extensive replayability, Overwatch 2’s Underworld PvE mode establishes a promising precedent for future cooperative content.
