There is a significant wait before the official unveiling of Persona 6, but it could mark a pivotal moment for Atlus. The positive reception of Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona 3 Reload, both cross-gen titles, follows a trend that began with the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles in 2020.
While it is commendable that previous console owners still have access to notable titles years after the launch of current systems, games designed for older consoles must contend with their limitations. It should come as no surprise that Atlus is participating in this trend, considering Persona 5's initial release as a cross-gen title for both PS3 and PS4 in 2016, and Persona 4's release as a PS2 exclusive two years after its successor.
However, Persona 6 presents an opportunity for Atlus to break this pattern and demonstrate their capabilities with current technology.
Persona 6 Should Only Come Out For Current-Gen Systems
The PS4 and Xbox One consoles have been around for almost a decade, but now that current-gen systems are more accessible, it's time to leave the previous generation behind. Sony and Microsoft have stopped developing cross-platform games for their respective consoles, and even games like Final Fantasy 16 are exclusively available on the PS5, indicating a growing confidence in games for the current generation.
However, there are still a few companies that continue to support the previous generation, such as Capcom, FromSoftware, and Atlus. They are able to release some of their projects for the aging systems. For example, Atlus has announced that Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona 3 Reload will be cross-generation titles launching in 2024, despite being showcased at Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase. While these games look impressive, it may be time for Atlus to move on from the PS4 and Xbox One after their release. The release of Persona 6 would provide an opportunity for Atlus to showcase what a game built from the ground up for modern platforms looks like.
With little information available about Persona 6, the anticipation for this highly awaited title has grown significantly due to the abundance of Persona 5 spin-offs that have kept fans occupied since the release of P5. Fans would undoubtedly be thrilled by an official announcement, particularly if the game is confirmed for the current consoles.
The main reason for this excitement is that it would demonstrate Atlus's readiness to move forward from the previous generation, where they achieved substantial success, and deliver something completely new. This is especially true if the rumors of Persona 6 launching in late 2024 turn out to be accurate. From a hardware perspective, the game can fully utilize the graphical capabilities and improved CPUs of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
It can utilize the lightning-fast speeds of SSDs to create scenarios that would be too demanding for a traditional hard drive to handle. This could involve seamlessly transitioning between the real world and an alternate dimension, or taking the already stylish combat to new levels, allowing Atlus' creativity to have fewer limitations.
Another significant reason for Atlus to exclusively develop Persona 6 for modern systems is to present the game as a reinvention of the series. The earlier games in the series were more focused on dungeon crawling due to their linear structure, but the latest titles have merged turn-based RPG gameplay with social simulation and time management elements. If Atlus is prepared to break away from the formula that led to the success of their recent Persona games, creating the game specifically for current systems would be the perfect way to announce the bold new direction of the series.
Persona 6 is currently in development.
