Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Gen V episode 6!
Summary
Soldier Boy's appearance in Gen V of The Boys is comical, but it disrupts the timeline and could potentially perplex fans.
The fact that Cate harbors a crush on Soldier Boy in Gen V is illogical, as the character vanished many years before Cate's birth.
Soldier Boy's personality in Gen V is inconsistent with his pre-disappearance persona, but the show's comedic nature allows for this discrepancy. Despite being hilariously portrayed, Soldier Boy's cameo appearance in Gen V disrupts The Boys' timeline. In The Boys season 3, Jensen Ackles' comedic take on Captain America through Soldier Boy's character was both funny and crucial to the season's plot, indicating that he will have a significant presence in the future of The Boys franchise. This explains why Soldier Boy makes a cameo appearance in Gen V. While his cameo undoubtedly stands out as one of the most prominent in Gen V, it unfortunately creates a plot inconsistency, disrupting the timeline of The Boys franchise.
Introducing Gen V, the highly-anticipated live-action spin-off of Amazon Prime Video's The Boys, now in the midst of releasing its first season. This new installment takes a fresh approach to The Boys universe, centering around Godolkin University, a college for supes. Our protagonist, Marie Moreau, is a young supe who seizes the opportunity to attend the school, only to uncover a major Vought conspiracy upon her arrival. In episode 6, the consequences of Cate's betrayal in Gen V unfold, putting the group in jeopardy and featuring a brief cameo by Soldier Boy.
Cate's Soldier Boy Crush Makes No Sense In Gen V
In Gen V episode 6, it is revealed that Cate used to have a huge crush on Soldier Boy. However, this detail seems illogical and absurd. In this episode, Marie, Andre, Jordan, and Dusty find themselves trapped inside Cate's mind due to her psychic abilities. As they desperately search for an escape, they stumble upon Soldier Boy unexpectedly in the middle of the woods. To everyone's surprise, Soldier Boy reveals that he was actually Cate's imaginary friend when she was a child, and she had a major crush on him.
In The Boys' timeline, Soldier Boy disappeared in the 1980s, and Vought concealed his absence by quickly replacing him with other superpowered individuals like Homelander. Considering that Cate is a college student in the 2020s, it is reasonable to assume that she was born in the early 2000s, long after Soldier Boy vanished. It is utterly nonsensical for a child to have an intense infatuation with a superhero who hasn't been in the spotlight for over two decades, especially since Vought covered up Soldier Boy's disappearance. Additionally, Soldier Boy only reappears around 2022, long after Cate's childhood.
Soldier Boy's Personality Also Makes No Sense In His Gen V Cameo
During the brief interaction between Soldier Boy and the Godolkin students, his personality is prominently displayed. However, his personality lacks coherence. In season 3 of The Boys, Soldier Boy is depicted as a stubborn and crude individual, with seriousness and vulgarity as his defining traits. Although viewers of The Boys are familiar with these aspects of Soldier Boy, the characters within the show's universe are not. Consequently, his personality seems out of place in Gen V episode 6. Once again, this issue can be attributed to the flaws in Gen V's handling of The Boys' timeline.
While Soldier Boy's personality in Gen V aligns with his character in The Boys season 3, it contradicts his personality before his disappearance in the 1980s. As Vought's top star, Soldier Boy's public image was meticulously managed by the company, portraying him in a manner similar to Captain America or Superman. Even though Cate would not have encountered Soldier Boy until many years later, she would have been exposed to the same projected personality Vought presented in the 1980s. Thus, this vulgar portrayal of Soldier Boy does not align with the show's narrative.
Soldier Boy's Gen V Cameo Is Hilarious Enough To Ignore Logic
Soldier Boy's appearance in Gen V may not seem logical, but it is so hilariously entertaining that logical inconsistencies can be overlooked. The Boys franchise prioritizes comedy, political satire, and pushing boundaries rather than striving for a flawless timeline. This isn't the first time The Boys has made a lore mistake, and it certainly won't be the last. Soldier Boy's cameo in Gen V is comedic, unexpected, and slightly offbeat, perfectly fitting the tone of Cate's imagination. While it would have been ideal for Soldier Boy's personality to align with his polished 1980s image, it ultimately isn't a significant concern in the world of Gen V.
New episodes of Gen V are available on Amazon Prime Video every Friday.
