Choi Yi-jae
TVING
Yi-jae's narrative is the driving force of the K-drama. In Episode 1, he is on his way to an interview when he receives a call from his girlfriend, who is certain that he will get the job. However, their conversation is interrupted by a man who purposely walks into traffic, getting hit and landing in front of Yi-jae. This incident seems to be a bad omen, and it is later revealed that Yi-jae has been unemployed for seven years and can only find part-time work.
Yi-jae goes to another job interview and fails to make a good impression on two of the interviewers. However, he manages to impress the boss, who recognizes his hard work and determination to attain various certifications despite losing his father at a young age. The drama doesn't stop there, though. After the interview, he receives a call from a friend informing him that their other friend had cheated them out of all their money in a bogus investment. When he goes to see his girlfriend, he finds her returning home with another man. Angry and feeling betrayed, he breaks up with her, convinced that he has caused her enough suffering.
Park Jin-tae
After returning, Yi-jae discovers that he has been evicted from his apartment. This becomes the tipping point for him, leading to his decision to end his own life. However, he soon wakes up in a new form, encountering Death and understanding the consequences of his actions. If he does not succeed in overcoming his challenges, he will be condemned to hell.
TVING
The series Death’s Game introduces Park Jin-tae (played by Choi Si-won) as the first reincarnation of Yi-jae. He awakens on a luxurious private jet, clad in a perfectly tailored suit. The plane experiences turbulence, but ultimately steadies itself. In the bedroom, a glowing stone materializes and moves towards Yi-jae.
At 33 years old, Park Jin-tae is the second son of Taekang’s CEO and was raised in a life of privilege and wealth. Despite his comfortable upbringing, Jin-tae was driven by a competitive spirit, especially towards his older brother. He even managed to succeed his brother as the company's heir, creating a rivalry between them. Coincidentally, Taekang is the company that Yi-jae has been striving to work for.
However, Jin-tae's aspirations are cut short when the jet engine catches fire and the plane disintegrates, resulting in the deaths of the pilot and crew. Tragically, Jin-tae perishes in the flames, marking the completion of one of Yi-jae's reincarnations.
Song Jae-seop
TVING
After Jin-tae dies, Yi-jae awakens in hell once more, confronted by Death. He is forced to confront the harsh reality of hell and the consequences of mocking death. Death then sends him into his next life as Song Jae-seop (Sung Hoon), a 38-year-old extreme sports enthusiast who has just completed a skydiving jump from a plane.
The familiar glowing stone reappears, and Yi-jae now inhabits the daring and risky life of Jae-seop, who has lived on the edge and pursued dangerous activities, even holding four Guinness World Records. The situation Yi-jae finds himself in is extreme as Jae-seop prepares to attempt the impossible by skydiving from 8,000 feet without a parachute.
Kwon Hyuk-soo
Yi-jae's objective is to hit a target enclosed by a net, with the promise of three billion in cash from his sponsor. With the same confidence as Jae-seop, he takes on the daring feat, convinced it will be a success. However, rather than accomplishing his goal, he ends up crash landing in a grisly heap on the pavement.
TVING
Yi-jae, upon his return to Death, finds no motivation to persevere through his punishment. However, Death insists on teaching him a lesson and propels him into his next reincarnation. The newest character in Death’s Game's cycle of reincarnations is a student named Kwon Hyuk-soo (Kim Kang-hoon).
Hyuk-soo, 17, lost his father at five. His mother became the breadwinner to support him. He studied hard in return, but suffered at school due to bullies. He kept it a secret to protect his mother. Feeling trapped, he threatened to jump off the roof to stop his bully, but it only made things worse.
Yi-jae tried to intervene but failed. Hyuk-soo's story reminded him of his own upbringing by a single mother. In an attempt to help, Yi-jae tried to turn the bully's right-hand man against him, but the bully was protected by a stronger senior.
The assistant stops supporting when Yi-jae humiliate the bully by pouring noodles on him. Seeking payback, he urges his boss to go after Yi-jae. However, the boss sees that Hyuk-soo is just a weak kid and scolds the bully, taking away his power. Later, after encountering the drunken bully, Hyuk-soo almost gets hit by a truck on his way home. As he hears a voice calling out to him from the truck, the bully strikes him on the head, ultimately beating him to death.
Lee Ju-hun
TVING
The next reincarnation character in Death’s Game is more intriguing. Yi-jae wakes up as Lee Ju-hun (Jang Seung-jo) while being waterboarded and restrained by a group of thugs. Just before they put a screwdriver through his eye, the glowing stone appears. Ju-hun, 35 years old, is known as a ‘fixer’ and a member of a global secret organization in the criminal world.
As a fixer, he resolves all of his client’s issues – even if it involves murder. His personal story? He appears to have fallen in love with one of the club’s female workers. After stealing money from his boss to run away together, he is ambushed before they can meet. The scene shifts back to him being held hostage, breaking free, and taking out all the henchmen.
Cho Tae-sang
However, Yi-jae is unwilling to continue living as a fixer and comes to the realization that he must gather the necessary funds to evade Death. This leads to a thrilling high-speed chase scene with Yi-jae on a motorcycle. Despite managing to successfully evade his pursuers and meet up with the girl, she ultimately betrays him by shooting him dead.
Cho Tae-sang
TVING
The next character to be reincarnated in Death’s Game is Cho Tae-sang (Lee Jae-wook). Yi-jae finds himself in Tae-sang’s body in a prison, feeling disoriented and unsure of what to do. A fellow inmate informs him that he will be released in a few days and advises him to control his temper. He is also cautioned about a dangerous inmate in their cell, who turns out to be the bully of Hyuk-soo.
Yi-jae beats him thoroughly but issues a warning. A glowing stone then appears and reveals that Tae-sang, 21, had once dreamed of becoming an MMA fighter, but had to give it up due to family circumstances. Needing money to protect his mother from loan sharks, he takes a job and is given money in exchange for taking the blame in a hit-and-run case.
The charges were initially minor until the victim died during the trial. Tae-sang was then charged with manslaughter and sent to prison for two years. Back in his cell, Yi-jae forces the bully to comply and portrays him as a weakling rather than a killer. While working in the woodshop, another inmate tries to kill him by lunging a saw blade at him.
He avoids the blade, causing it to rebound and strike the assailant in the neck. Despite thugs attempting to attack him on behalf of a client, they are unsuccessful. Tae-sang is eventually released from jail and declines money from the lawyer who initially framed him. He then locates and secures the hidden money, stowing some in a subway storage locker for safekeeping. On his way to see his mother, Yi-jae is stabbed by the father of a hit-and-run victim.
As he protests his innocence to the grieving father, Tae-sang's cellmate arrives. The man flees, and Tae-sang discovers that his cellmate has betrayed him, prompting him to fatally stab him in self-defense.
The Baby
Yi-jae’s subsequent life is brief but distressing. Upon awakening, he finds himself in the form of a baby with negligent and abusive parents. Following a welfare check for child abuse, the mother tragically ends the baby's life by suffocation.
Jang Geon-woo
TVING
Jang Geon-woo (played by Lee Do-hyun) is the most intricately depicted reincarnation character in Death’s Game. After awakening in his body, Yi-jae realizes he has a chance to retrieve the rest of the money from the locker.
At 24 years old, Geon-woo has been admired for his looks since childhood. He easily became a model, but lives a directionless life. Yi-jae takes advantage of his glamorous lifestyle and visits a club where he coincidentally meets Park Tae-woo (played by Kim Ji-hoon), who is the CEO of Taekang Group. Waking up hungover, Yi-jae must navigate through the day as Geon-woo, working at a cafe.
Yi-jae’s ex-girlfriend, Lee Ji-soo (Go Yoon-jung,) unexpectedly shows up, stirring up memories of their past and prompting Yi-jae to reexamine his last night alive. He discovers that Ji-soo wasn't on a date, but was actually celebrating a writing competition win with her prize money. Determined to reconnect with her, Geon-woo continues working at the cafe to be near her.
As time passes, Geon-woo shares a story idea with Ji-soo about reincarnated death, leading to a growing bond between them. However, Ji-soo is still grieving over Yi-jae's death. During an outing, Yi-jae confesses his true feelings for Ji-soo and admits to his mistakes. In a surprising twist, he reveals that Geon-woo is actually him, Yi-jae.
While doing so, a red car collides with them. A man emerges from the car, and it turns out to be Tae-woo. It turns out that some of the reincarnations are intertwined. The man that Tae-sang concealed in the hit-and-run was Tae-woo, and the person who staged Jin-tae's death as an accident was Ju-hun. To conceal his actions, Tae-woo suffocates Geon-woo to death.
