The DC movie universe will return to their roots with the new film Superman: Legacy, set to hit theaters in 2025.
The movie was announced in January 2023, only a month after Henry Cavill revealed that he would no longer play Superman.
In December 2022, he shared on Instagram, "I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will not be returning as Superman. It's not the easiest news after being asked by the studio to announce my return back in October before their hire, but that's life."
Cavill debuted as Superman in the 2013 film Man of Steel, and made a cameo as Clark Kent in 2022's Black Adam. In June 2023, DCU announced that David Corenswet would be assuming the role of the superhero, with Rachel Brosnahan cast as Lois Lane.
After five months, Gunn revealed on Instagram Threads that the film's script is "99.9%" complete. He mentioned that he is constantly making minor adjustments, but the script has been essentially finished long before the strike. When Is ‘Superman: Legacy’ Going to Be Released?
Director and writer James Gunn announced in January 2023 that the new movie is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
“This is being written by me, I’m in the middle of it and I’m having a great day doing it,” Gunn said in a YouTube video posted by DC at the time.

Corenswet is set to take over the role of Superman from Cavill, while Brosnahan will step into the shoes of Amy Adams as Lois Lane. The rest of the cast will feature Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Safran explained to the outlet that the movie focuses on Superman's struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He described Superman as embodying truth, justice, and the American way, and as a symbol of kindness in a world that often sees kindness as outdated.
Gunn clarified in August 2023 that despite Corenswet being younger than Cavill, the film is not intended to be a "young Superman" movie, but rather simply a Superman movie.
