Red Dead Redemption 2 may not be typically associated with the supernatural, but the mystical and mythological elements of the wild west and the Americana aesthetic are deeply ingrained in Rockstar Games' epic western. The history of the American west and spiritualism in America are closely intertwined, and Rockstar Games has continually paid homage to this legacy in its cowboy franchise. While the first Red Dead Redemption explored the idea of the paranormal more extensively through its Undead Nightmare DLC, Red Dead Redemption 2 takes a more subtle approach.
One subtle reference to the supernatural in Red Dead Redemption 2 is the presence of a witch's cauldron and a woman whom Arthur Morgan suspects may be a witch or aspiring to be one. Although a definitive link cannot be established between these two Easter eggs, they collectively contribute to a vivid portrayal of the American west and honor the historical sources from which the game draws inspiration. In addition to these allusions to witchcraft, Red Dead Redemption 2 also features ghosts and vampires, further cementing its direct connection to the paranormal.
Finding A Witch's Cauldron
Red Dead Redemption 2 features a captivating historical backdrop, making it one of the finest video games in terms of setting. Taking place in 1899, about two decades after the last American witch trial, it's only fitting that the game pays homage to witchcraft. In the northern region of Ambarino, players can stumble upon a discreet small hut nestled amidst a cluster of trees, just off a nearby horse trail. Although easily accessible from the path, the hut is expertly concealed, requiring keen observation to spot. Upon approaching the hut, players will discover an array of witchcraft artifacts, including a cauldron. In Red Dead Online, the hut remains inaccessible, though eerie sounds reverberate in the vicinity.
Venturing inside the hut, players will come across a bubbling cauldron, suggesting that this peculiar place is still being utilized. Surrounding the hut are fresh herbs, contributing to a mystic ambiance. Notably, a taxidermized raven is present, serving as a symbol of the occult across various cultures. Additionally, a chest and nearby tables contain herbivore bait and other ordinary outdoor supplies. Should players opt to drink from the cauldron, they will lose consciousness only to awaken nearby, fully rejuvenated. While seemingly straightforward, this hut and its cauldron serve as a playful nod to the occult and rank among the most enigmatic Easter eggs in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Arthur Can Encounter A Witch In West Elizabeth
In the furthest northern area of West Elizabeth, bordering the Grizzlies, Arthur comes across a secluded hermit woman residing in a small shack accompanied by her dogs. Should the player approach her property, they will be greeted by the menacing growls of the dogs, and the woman will raise her voice in warning. Failure to leave promptly will result in the dogs attacking the player, while the woman brandishes her shotgun in an attempt to kill Arthur. Upon successfully clearing the area, should the player press Y to complete the inspect site prompt, a journal entry will be recorded in Arthur's journal, complete with a sketch of the woman, noting the possibility of her being involved in witchcraft.
These subtle witchcraft elements serve as additional details that enhance the immersive experience of Red Dead Redemption 2. Coming across the belongings of occultists tucked away in the most remote corners of the map creates a vivid sense of a world with its own unique stories. It isn't far-fetched to imagine that those practicing witchcraft might seek refuge in the untamed American West, hoping to escape the judgment of mainstream society. With the existence of ghosts scattered throughout the game's world and even a vampire residing in Saint Denis, the opportunity for players to directly engage with the supernatural through the witch's potion offers a truly exceptional interaction with the occult.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
