Pokémon Horizons introduces its own original villainous team in the anime known as the Explorers. Unlike Team Rocket, the Explorers are portrayed as mysterious and make fewer appearances. In the first two episodes, they attempt to seize Liko's pendant and are portrayed as highly skilled. Initially, they execute a complex infiltration and later use Liko as leverage when confronted by Friede and the Rising Volt Tacklers. The first introduced Explorer is Amethio, a young man with unique half-black, half-white hair. His partner is the new Paldean Pokémon Ceruledge. Accompanying Amethio are his two subordinates, referred to as "Grunts" in the games, named Zirc and Onia.
The Explorers Are a New Kind of Pokémon Villain
The Explorers are distinct from Team Rocket in several ways. Unlike Team Rocket, who appeared frequently in the original Pokémon anime, the Explorers have only made occasional appearances and have sent different agents to pursue Liko. The Explorers possess more advanced technology, such as a submarine that Amethio used to track the Rising Volt Tacklers' airship. In episode #6, it was revealed that Amethio was just one of many agents, with Spinel being another agent tasked with capturing Liko.
Spinel proved to be a cunning villain. He utilized Magneton, a common Pokémon, to generate electromagnetic interference around the airship, cutting off communication and isolating the crew. Spinel took advantage of his Pokémon's hypnosis ability to manipulate Liko's mind and steal her pendant. He engaged in battles with Friede remotely, issuing commands through a small transmitter. Although Spinel was ultimately defeated, his methods were very close to succeeding, making it likely that he may attempt them again in the future.
Who Are the Explorers?
The Explorers, led by Gibeon, have yet to make an appearance in the anime. Similar to Team Rocket's Giovanni, Gibeon communicates with his followers remotely, and their base of operations appears to be extensive. Hamber, Gibeon's second in command, presents himself as Gibeon's butler. When Amethio failed to obtain the pendant, Gibeon promptly removed him from the case and replaced him with Spinel. In addition to Amethio and Spinel, there are three other known "Admins": Agate, Onyx (likely to have a different name in the dub to avoid confusion with a Rock-type Pokémon), and Sango. All members of the Explorers have names related to gemstones.
The true intentions and motivations of Gibeon and the Explorers have yet to be revealed; however, they relentlessly pursue the airship wherever it goes. Their main objective is Liko's pendant, which has demonstrated protective abilities, the ability to transform into an enigmatic Pokémon, and a reaction to the Ancient Poké Balls, similar to the one owned by Roy. Their interest in the pendant suggests that they may be after the Pokémon contained within these Ancient Poké Balls, which are rumored to belong to Lucius, an ancient adventurer considered to be the strongest Pokémon trainer in history. After being taken off the pursuit of Liko, Amethio's new assignment is to track down the escaped Black Rayquaza from Roy's Poké Ball.
What Lies Ahead for the Explorers?
However, the organization is not a cohesive unit functioning flawlessly. Utilizing Black Rayquaza as a pretext, Amethio sought to catch up with the Rising Volt Tacklers, a group also in pursuit of Rayquaza's whereabouts. Defying explicit orders, Amethio willingly engaged with Friede once again. Furthermore, it appears that Amethio and Spinel do not share a harmonious relationship, similar to the dynamic between Jesse and Cassidy. Although the other administrators have had limited involvement thus far, they seemingly possess strong opinions and may prove challenging to collaborate with. The Explorers are determined to acquire Liko's pendant, but after unsuccessful attempts by Amethio and Spinel, the responsibility will soon pass to a new leader. They have also realized that the pendant can only be activated by Liko, making kidnapping him along with the pendant a new objective. In response, the Rising Volt Tacklers have pledged to safeguard Liko and the pendant, becoming adversaries of the Explorers.
Speculation among fans suggests that Amethio, who was introduced prior to the show's debut, may undergo a redemption arc in the future. It is believed that his failures and subsequent reprimands could serve as the catalyst for this transformation. Despite his current loyalty to the Explorers, repeated disappointments and consistent defiance of orders might lead Amethio to depart from the organization, either involuntarily or willingly. Zirc and Onia, who have exhibited unwavering loyalty to Amethio, often joining him in his insubordination, might also choose to leave in such a scenario.
The Explorers, an enigmatic organization, hold numerous secrets yet to be unveiled. As the primary antagonists of Pokémon Horizons, they are likely to continue making appearances until the resolution of the current pendant storyline. It is evident that without the guidance of experienced adults like Friede and the other members of Rising Volt Tacklers, Liko and Roy would find themselves in significant jeopardy. This depiction renders the Explorers a dangerous faction, distinct from Team Rocket. It is hoped that future episodes of Pokémon Horizons will shed light on the motivations driving the Explorers' relentless pursuit of the pendant.
