Avowed is taking the Pillars of Eternity series to new heights with a first-person adventure that aligns with contemporary RPGs. While the game has a modern appeal, it doesn't stray from traditional fantasy tropes, setting itself apart from an industry saturated with subversion and grim tones. Avowed's diverse creatures are a significant aspect of the experience, as enemies play a crucial role in both the lore and gameplay of RPGs.
The Pillars of Eternity franchise is set in the fantasy world of Eora, a mystical planet with several lore-heavy continents similar to The Elder Scrolls' worldbuilding. Obsidian has gone all out to realize its vision for the northern continent known as The Living Lands, which is said to be the birthplace of the light-skinned "Meadow-folk" subrace of humans. The Living Lands is a daunting frontier with hostile and strange wildlife hidden from the mortal world by the elements. With Avowed exploring the mysterious northern continent, players are discovering the creatures that inhabit this new section of Eora.
Xaurips
Giant Spider
The Xaurips, a humanoid lizard race, are set to make a return in the upcoming game Avowed. They were featured multiple times in the game's recent gameplay trailer. In the original game, Pillars of Eternity, the Xaurips were portrayed as enemies. They belong to a dragon-worshiping culture of tribal communities that have a history of struggling to coexist with other races. In the new game, it appears that their tribes are flourishing in The Living Lands, with a shaman of the Xaurip making an appearance in the trailer.
Pillars of Eternity fans will find the giant spider featured in the recent trailer a familiar sight in the world of Eora. However, this new specimen from The Living Lands is particularly imposing with its towering frame and longest legs of any spider in the series so far. Its size suggests it is just one example of the diverse and impressive wildlife that can be found in the region. And with its venomous capabilities, encountering one of these creatures is sure to be a daunting experience.
Ogre
The ogres in Avowed's gameplay trailer have been beautifully adapted from the isometric art style of the original games. Despite the shift to first person, encountering these armored beasts still carries the same sense of intimidation that lower level players may remember from Pillars of Eternity. In the trailer, the ogre charges at the gun-wielding protagonist with a wild abandon, making for a challenging and exciting enemy.
New Insectoid Creature
In the desert-like landscape of The Living Lands, the player can be seen shield-bashing a never-before-seen insectoid creature. This massive bug appears to be in its mature stage, as evidenced by the presence of a smaller specimen nearby that could potentially be its offspring.
Lich(?)
Skeleton Undead
As the player character delves deeper into the cave, they come face to face with a formidable foe - a skeletal undead adorned in wizard-like robes, with magical energy pulsating from its eye sockets. Despite its appearance differing from the liches encountered in Pillars, this undead creature wields a level of power that suggests it may be a lich. Its ability to command thralls is further evidenced by the presence of a normal skeleton backing it up. The player character brandishes their flaming sword, ready to engage in battle.
Dead warriors that have been possessed are a common trope in both Pillars and the broader fantasy genre. These creatures, which also appeared in Avowed's initial reveal trailer, come in a wide variety of forms and can be found in various caves with unique armor and weapons. In the trailer, a large group of skeletons is shown swarming the player character, suggesting that they will be a frequent and challenging enemy throughout The Living Lands.
Unknown Armored Undead
The gameplay trailer showcased a peculiar scene where a decayed corpse, wearing a bizarre mechanical armor, was seen slumped over a uniquely carved stone structure. Although the presence of this figure may seem perplexing, the inhuman shape of its helmet and the appearance of runes on it suggest a possible ritualistic connection to the creature. It is even plausible that this enigmatic figure has some association with The Living Lands' Maegfolc, a distinct lifeform created by Eora's gods with a specific purpose beyond a conventional ecosystem.
Plague-infested Bear
The gameplay trailer of Avowed has introduced a new and terrifying enemy - a plague-infested bear. This creature is a clear representation of the devastating effects of the mysterious plague that has plagued The Living Lands. Unlike the bears in the first two Pillars titles, these creatures have been infected with a fungus-like infection that takes over their bodies, causing them to become aggressive. The plague seems to have caused the growth of small mushrooms on the bear's body, which could be the reason for its violent behavior.
Plague-infested Undead
The new undead featured in the gameplay trailer stand out from the traditional skeleton variety, with their bodies covered in fungal-like growths caused by the plague. These creatures can be found in dark caves, similar to the plagued bear, and it seems that the mysterious ailment is not limited to just animals. One interesting aspect is that some of these undead carry a club, possibly indicating that they were once an ogre that succumbed to the disease and now fights alongside the undead humans. Unlike the skeletal undead, these creatures still have decaying flesh, which sets them apart and raises questions on whether the plague is responsible for their zombie-like state. It is possible that Pillar of Eternity's Animancy will explore this concept further. Avowed is set to release in 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
