The Continental, a spinoff from the John Wick movies, delves into the relationship between Winston Scott and Charon. Winston, played by Colin Woodell (portrayed by Ian McShane in the films), embarks on his journey to become the owner of the New York Continental Hotel. Along the way, he forms a friendship with Charon (played by Ayomide Adegun), who eventually becomes the hotel's concierge.
Director Albert Hughes discusses how the show explores the dynamic between these two characters. Despite their differences, Hughes explains that they must unite to overcome a traumatic situation. Below are his thoughts on the matter, as shared during an interview with TVInsider.
The Continental is the Perfect Expansion to Explore Winston and Charon's Backstories
: The concept intrigued me. Initially, Winston is depicted as a cunning individual successfully executing a high-stakes deception in London. This early portrayal reflects the true nature of his character. He always possesses a hidden agenda, constantly outsmarting everyone around him like a skilled player of three-dimensional chess. On the other hand, we have Charon, an innocent and naive teenager who yearns for a better life. Unfortunately, he falls under the influence of a deranged sociopath, played by Mel Gibson, named Cormac. Charon is gradually corrupted by the horrors he witnesses. Winston, recognizing this troubling path, approaches Charon with the understanding that his actions are unacceptable. This dynamic reminds me of classic films such as "48 Hrs." or the original "The Defiant Ones" from 1958, not to be confused with my brother Allen Hughes' documentary. These movies center around two characters of different races and backgrounds, forced into a traumatic situation, where they reluctantly collaborate and must find a way to resolve their predicament.Selling a John Wick spinoff show without the titular character in the lead may pose a challenge. However, the expansive world created by the franchise offers endless opportunities for additional exploration, making The Continental an undeniable choice. Though critics' reviews of the show are currently mixed, this spinoff serves as an ideal avenue to further delve into the friendship between Winston and Charon, which was established in the films.
Although McShane and Reddick were given their moments to shine in the first four movies, the theatrical franchise didn't fully delve into their deep connection until Charon's death in John Wick: Chapter 4. Winston, remembering the concierge, reveals that he struggled to decide what to put on Charon's gravestone, ultimately settling on "Friend" because that's what Charon truly represented. While the movies didn't delve into the intricacies of their friendship, The Continental now offers audiences the opportunity to witness how they first met and formed their bond.
With the introduction of the show, viewers not only get to witness the origins of these two characters, but also the unique operations of the New York Continental under Cormac, played by Mel Gibson. It's clear that Cormac's establishment had a vastly different approach compared to Winston's leadership. If the spinoff proves to be successful, there are countless avenues for the John Wick franchise to explore in both movie and TV formats. However, given the mixed reviews The Continental has received initially, the success of future spinoff Ballerina may be crucial in determining the prospects for further expansions to be developed.
The remaining episodes of The Continental will stream on Peacock on Friday, September 29 and October 6.
