Actor Arthur Darvill, who played the companion Rory Williams in Doctor Who, reflects on his departure from the series and describes it as a perfect ending for his character and Karen Gillan's character, Amy Pond. Darvill joined the show in 2010 and remained a regular until season 7, when both he and Gillan left the series in the finale episode "The Angel Take Manhattan." In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Darvill discusses his positive experiences on the show and the satisfaction he felt working with his fellow cast members and showrunner Steven Moffat. When it came time to film their final moments, Darvill was ready and embraced the script, while Gillan had some reservations and only read it when filming began.

"We had been discussing it for some time. Initially, I didn't anticipate being involved for an extended period. Steven [Moffat] claims, 'Oh no, I always had a plan,' although I have my doubts! I felt like I was just waiting to meet my demise at any moment, but it never occurred," he remembers. "Then, around the middle of season 6, they gathered us together and asked, 'How long do you want to continue with this? This is our suggestion, but what do you desire?' It was a rare occurrence, and it truly highlighted the supportive and caring nature of the producers and writers. It felt like a family, which was a positive aspect of being part of that conversation. The writing was exceptional, and Steven's brilliance made the entire experience feel like a grand fairytale. I believe the story arcs he crafted for each character were intricate, clever, and thrilling. Every time we received a script, especially his, it felt like a special treat.

When we received the script, I immediately read it because I was eager to discover what unfolded... I was completely engrossed in the story, so it was captivating to see the outcome. Naturally, it evoked a strong emotional reaction from me, but I also thought it provided a perfect conclusion for them - somewhat open-ended, yet deeply emotional. I appreciated the surprise and sadness of Rory being whisked away. It was a powerful and unexpected moment. However, Kazza refused to read the script. She resisted for quite some time. I was eager to discuss it with her since it involved both of us."

Rory's time as a companion in Doctor Who was filled with complex moments. He was introduced as a nurse in Amy's hometown of Leadworth in season 5, but it was later revealed that he was actually her childhood friend and fiancé. Initially hesitant to join the Doctor on his adventures in space and time, Rory eventually agrees and a shared dream helps Amy realize her true feelings for him. Unfortunately, their restored relationship is abruptly interrupted when Rory is shot and erased from existence due to the cracks in time.

However, Rory is briefly revived as a Roman Centurion Auton duplicate and aids in saving the universe from destruction. From that point on, he becomes a more active and heroic figure throughout the subsequent seasons of Doctor Who. Rory leads the charge in rescuing Amy from powerful enemies and navigating intricate temporal situations, all the while growing closer to both Amy and the Doctor. Eventually, Rory and Amy decide to live their own lives outside of their adventures with the Doctor. Although they will eventually be separated from him for good, they are confident that they will have a fulfilling and happy life together in 20th-century New York.

"The Angels Take Manhattan" marks a poignant and rewarding conclusion for Doctor Who companions Rory and Amy as they bid farewell.
